New long-wheelbase model smoothes ride. introductionthe 2005 jeep wrangler lineup includes a new unlimited model. Introduced late in the 2004 model year in sport trim, the jeep wrangler unlimited is also available in rubicon trim for 2005, bringing added creature comfort to serious off-roaders. jeep wrangler remains an icon, a symbol of go-anywhere adventure. The interior is spartan. And it doesn't handle very well, so care should be exercised, particularly in the rain. Built along jeep's 'go anywhere, do anything' design philosophy, the rubicon is a 4x4 gem. We found it performed admirably on hell's revenge, cliff hanger, and other challenging trails around moab, utah. Heavy-gauge diamond-plate sill guards are bolted to the body sides to protect the rocker panels from damage and dings from rocks and stumps in the backcountry. Goodyear wrangler 31-inch tires are mounted on 16-inch, five-spoke aluminum wheels with a dished face to protect them from debris and obstacles. Generous ground clearance helps the rubicon traverse the trail. one of the biggest decisions when buying a wrangler is selecting the top. Purists prefer the soft top, a high-quality piece of equipment that can be configured according to the weather. Doors may be removed for the maximum open-air experience. The hard top comes with full-height doors and roll-up windows. Rearward visibility is better, and it's further aided by the rear-window defroster, wiper and washer. Wind noise is greatly reduced. The hard top can be removed, although we haven't tried this. Either top is far easier to remove or install than those of pre-2001 models and provides much better sealing from the elements. the exterior mirrors are made of plastic, which jeep engineers say holds up better than metal when going off-road. interiorgetting into a jeep wrangler requires a tall step up. (running boards are not available as they'd be vulnerable on rough trails.) once inside, the cabin is spartan but highly functional. seats and fabrics are comfortable. The easily removable, fold-and-tumble rear seat is equipped with the latch (lower anchors and upper tethers for children) system for mounting child safety seats directly to the structure of the seat. On all models, the interior is weatherproofed, and can be cleaned with a hose, thanks to drain plugs in the floor. The interior light continues to be managed by a switch in the door frame, so a fuse must be pulled to extinguish the light when the wrangler is operated sans doors. the wrangler remains miles away from luxurious. Recent improvements, however, make the interior more comfortable than it used to be. The mirror automatically dims when headlights shine on it; this bit of luxury technology may sound out of place in a wrangler, but it's an important feature when the top is off. Radio controls are located in the center stack. Corner pods located just behind both b-pillars house interior lamps, providing theater lighting. the 10-inch longer wheelbase on the unlimited translates directly into more interior room, especially in the back seats and cargo area. Rear-seat legroom is up by two inches over the standard models, and the space behind the rear seat grows lengthwise by 13 inches. The unlimited's towing capacity is 3500 pounds compared with the shorter wrangler's 2000 pounds. research firm j. 2010 acura tsx review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The availability of a v6 for the 2010 acura tsx represents a step almost as big as the styling changes introduced with the 2009 model year. Acura's superb navigation system is the equal of anything in the class, and it displays real-time traffic with congestion re-routing and local and national weather. The top-line audio system sets a standard for the class, too, with superbly crisp surround sound. Acura's v6 is smooth and linear, and up in the higher revs makes a pleasant growl. The v-6 model is heavier by 210 pounds and takes 3 mpg off epa city and highway ratings. And it needs an extra 15 inches of space for a u-turn. The tsx v-6 gets an epa-estimated 18/27 mpg. the tsx uses front-wheel drive, whereas true sports sedans are rear-wheel drive. That said, the tsx is one of the better-handling front-wheel-drive sedans. And in its class it's hard to beat as an everyday driver that can still be fun on a winding road. The 2. 4-liter engine is rated at 201-hp, styling is true to acura themes, the more aggressive, buff look to emphasize stance introduced on the 2009 model. the 2010 acura tsx competes primarily with the audi a4, bmw 3 series, and lexus is. Other competitors include the cadillac cts, infiniti g37, mercedes-benz c-class, saab 9-3, volkswagen cc, volvo s60. Other acura-approved accessories include 18-inch, 10-spoke, chrome-look or ebony-finish alloy wheels; backup sensor; wheel locks; sport bumper kit; rear bumper applique; deck lid spoiler or wing spoiler; moonroof visor; car cover; and nose mask. safety features include a full complement of airbags for front and side curtain airbags in back. Rear outboard seats provide anchors (latch) for child safety seats. Antilock brakes let the driver steer the car during emergency stops, brake assist boosts initial brake pressure in panic stops and electronic brake-force distribution apportions brake application between front and rear to optimize stopping distance. Electronic stability assist, coupled with traction control, adjusts brake and throttle to keep the car going where it's supposed to go through evasive or avoidance maneuvers or when road conditions deteriorate. Tire pressure monitors are standard. walkaroundthere is a consistency to acura's styling that ties its current models together and the tsx is no exception. Although it stretches the mold a bit, as it should, there's still no mistaking it for anything but one of honda's luxury line. the front end blends elements from acura's other two sedans, the sporty tl and the more serious rl, and from the mdx sport utility. The headlight housings, for instance, with their squinty lenses curling around the front fenders to reach deep into the arcs of the front wheelwells, look like a direct lift from the tl. The elongated, pentagonal silver bar topping the similarly outlined grille pulls from both the mdx grille. The gaping lower air intake is a new design cue and shaves visual mass from what might otherwise be an overpowering front bumper while adding function by funneling needed cooling air into the engine compartment and reducing front end lift. Hood sculpting defines the tsx's centerline and front fenders. the side view departs a bit more from the family look, but keeps just enough of the cues to stay true to its design dna. This is especially evident in the side lenses of the headlight and taillight housings and the silhouette of the trailing lip of the trunk lid, all of which closely mirror the previous tsx. In much sharper relief, though, are the sculpted character lines in the door panels. These add visual bulk and combine with edgy wheel arches remindful, again, of the mdx to make a stronger statement about the car's sporty aspirations. Door handles embedded in the upper crease give the view a cleaner look. the rear aspect, sad to say, suggests of recent toyota camrys more than of the previous tsx in its overly busy styling. A deeply cut horizontal line slices straight across the rear vertical of the trunk lid, itself looking almost concave against the gently convex vertical of earlier models. Taillights bridge the seam between trunk and fenders and the license plate recess mirrors the five-angle grille, visually pushing the trailing lip higher and seeming to add sheet metal across the lower reaches of the trunk lid. The rear bumper cups the trunk opening with unflattering sedan like bulk, which makes the hot rod-spec dual exhaust tips look a little lame. six-cylinder models are identified only by standard 18-inch wheels, “v6” badge on the trunk, and slightly larger lower grille inlets. interiorliking the new acura tsx interior is easy. It's comfortable without being plush, sporty without being sparse. Communication between driver and car is, for the most part, open and easy and unabridged. the front seats are supportive, with enough side bolstering for reasonably rambunctious motoring on twisty roads. The bottom cushion could be deeper, but this is a common shortcoming in many cars. The front seat passenger still gets shortchanged with no height adjustment, which leaves even taller people feeling as if they're sitting in a hole. Cabin measurements show the tsx with the least front headroom, more rear legroom than the is, and about par elsewhere. the rear seat is more like a bench than twin buckets, and space for the lower extremities is snug; this is the typical pinch point in compact sedans. Rear head restraints adjust for height, which is a plus for its occupants, although even when at their lowest position they limit the visibility out the back window from the inside rear view mirror. The steering wheel sports push buttons and toggles controlling more than a dozen functions, not counting the horn, making it look like it would be just as comfortable in a jet fighter cockpit as in a car. The high-end audio setup does force the relocation of the cd changer down into the bowels of the center stack, where it's not as easily accessed as with the base system, which parks it at the top of the stack, but that's a minor complaint, and one that won't even show up on the technophiles' radar. a. Solid truck priced to sell. introductionthe 2006 chevy silverado is the last of its generation. An all-new generation of trucks is being introduced for 2007. So look for deals on the outgoing 2006 classic versions. The 2006 silverado rides well and handles well. It's quick and it's comfortable. Boxed and hydroformed frame rails provide a strong, rigid platform. It is, as the advertising tagline says, like a rock. Heated seats, a bose stereo, xm satellite radio and other options make long days spent in a silverado comfortable and enjoyable. silverado benefitted from some significant revisions for 2005. Lower-profile tires on 17-inch wheels provided better handling than before. A gas/electric hybrid option promised lower operating cost with v8 performance. More minor changes for 2005 included dual electric cooling fans, which are quieter and more efficient than the engine-driven fan used previously; while aerodynamic refinements to the front end and running boards reduced wind noise and promised a slight improvement in fuel economy. Since then, ford has introduced an all-new f-150, dodge has re-engineered the ram, nissan has rolled out the appropriately named titan, and toyota has joined the fray with the biggest tundra ever. There isn't a dog among them. Three trim levels are available: base, ls, and lt, plus a sporty ss. Full-width fleetside beds are standard, but retro sportside beds are offered for selected models. Avaialble only as a crew cab with a 6-foot, 6-inch bed (instead of the standard 1500 crew cab's 5-foot, 8-inch bed), the 1500hd hauls 3,073 pounds with 2wd, 2,766 pounds with 4wd, and tows 10,200 pounds. Power is provided by the big 6. 0-liter v8 that's used in the 2500hd/3500. standard equipment on all silverado models, even the most basic w/t (work truck), are air conditioning, am/fm stereo, tilt steering, a chromed front bumper, painter rear step bumber, and 17-inch painted steel wheels. moving up to ls trim (starting at $19,725) adds cloth instead of vinyl upholstery, a cd player, and an expanded list of options. Ls crew cabs 24,615) come with the 4. 8-liter v8 and automatic. Silverado lt (starting at $23,000) is more luxurious, with upgraded upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and power windows, locks and mirrors. Again the crew cab version 28,165) comes with more, including an upgraded six-speaker stereo. The 5. 3-liter v8 is standard on lt crew cabs. Lt2 and lt3 option packages add yet more equipment, but both price and specific content depend on cab style, driveline, and other factors. Ss gets a high-performance z60 chassis package; 20-inch wheels and tires; full-time all-wheel drive; a lower, wider stance; and special exterior and interior trim. a hybrid option 1,500) is available in several states. Crew cab models offer a panasonic dvd passenger entertainment system 1,295) and rear-seat audio controls. Late in the model year, extended cabs and crew cabs will offer a power sunroof 795). A passenger-sensing system automatically deactivates the passenger-side front air bag under certain conditions to protect children. Active safety features include anti-lock brakes (abs) on all models. The silverado shares its bold design cues with the avalanche, the trailblazer suv, and the mid-size colorado pickup. The silverado looks more conteporary than the relatively conservative suburban and tahoe suvs. silverado's headlights angle down at the top like the determined eyebrows of a marine drill sergeant. A large band runs across the middle of the grille punctuated in the middle by a big, gold chevy bow tie. All of this is smoothly integrated into the front end, along with spaces for fog lamps and recessed tow hooks. The flared engine hood and squared-off wheel openings continue the aggressive theme down the sides of the truck. In the rear are bulging taillamps that maintain the chevrolet family look yet uniquely identify the silverado. silverado's large door openings make getting in and out easier, and the door handles are big and easy to grab. Optional puddle lamps mounted beneath the big side mirrors light the ground along the sides of the truck, handy in the woods and in the city. Heavy-duty models have running lights on the roof, tailgate, and leading and trailing edges of their bulging rear fenders. They add visibility for improved safety. Indentations stamped into the inner bed walls can hold boards to form bulkhead dividers or a second floor for two-tier loading. The silverado's load floor is 31. 6 inches above the ground on 2wd models, and 33. 7 inches with 4wd. That's relatively low, and low is good when loading heavy cargo. Short-box beds are 78. 7 inches long; long boxes are 97. 6 inches long. Fleetside boxes are 64. 8 inches wide (at the floor); sportside boxes measure 49. 1 inches wide. All fleetside boxes measure 50 inches wide between the wheel housings. a pro-tec composite box is available for silverado 1500 extended cab short-box models. Pro-tec is a nearly indestructible material that's lighter and stronger than steel. It never rusts and it resists dents. It can support a lot more weight than a steel tailgate. interiorinside, the silverado is roomy and comfortable. The seats are big and cushy, though we don't always find them comfortable for long trips. The standard front bench seat can seat three, giving extended cab and crew cab models capacity for six people. It's split 40/20/40, and the middle part folds down to become a center console/armrest. There's lots of head room and plenty of leg room, hip room, and shoulder room. The standard bench is available in cloth or vinyl. optional bucket seats are more comfortable and adjust every which way. We like both the premium cloth and the leather. The bucket seats are separated by a deep center console that holds lots of stuff. The top of the lid features a nice rubber-lined indention handy for small items, though it would be even better if the rubber was an insert that could be removed for cleaning. The top of the console is angled forward, which seems unfortunate because clipboards and other items placed there tend to slide off. A big coat hook makes picking up the dry cleaning easier. the instrument panel features a large speedometer and tachometer. Smaller gauges to the right display oil pressure, water temperature, fuel quantity, and battery charge. Hd models with the heavy-duty trailering package come with a transmission temperature gauge on the left. All use highly legible white-on-black graphics. Solid truck priced to sell. introductionthe 2006 chevy silverado is the last of its generation. An all-new generation of trucks is being introduced for 2007. So look for deals on the outgoing 2006 classic versions. The 2006 silverado rides well and handles well. It's quick and it's comfortable. Boxed and hydroformed frame rails provide a strong, rigid platform. It is, as the advertising tagline says, like a rock. Heated seats, a bose stereo, xm satellite radio and other options make long days spent in a silverado comfortable and enjoyable. silverado benefitted from some significant revisions for 2005. Lower-profile tires on 17-inch wheels provided better handling than before. A gas/electric hybrid option promised lower operating cost with v8 performance. More minor changes for 2005 included dual electric cooling fans, which are quieter and more efficient than the engine-driven fan used previously; while aerodynamic refinements to the front end and running boards reduced wind noise and promised a slight improvement in fuel economy. Since then, ford has introduced an all-new f-150, dodge has re-engineered the ram, nissan has rolled out the appropriately named titan, and toyota has joined the fray with the biggest tundra ever.
