Many of us grew up with them because the civic has been a honda trademark for more than 30 years. clever engineering, honda's renowned assembly quality and all the conveniences create an entry-level car that provides more than basic transportation. Honda makes a civic to suit many types of people. Trim levels include cx, dx, lx, ex, hx and si. the least expensive model is the cx hatchback. Even a basic radio costs extra here, though a split/folding rear seat, tinted glass and a rear-window defroster are included. Regardless of body style, the basic dx trim level includes dual outside mirrors, an am/fm radio and adjustable steering column. All sedans and automatic transmission-equipped coupes and hatchbacks come with power steering. Mid-grade lx sedans add air conditioning, power windows and door locks and cruise control. Ex sedans and coupes come with just about everything, including a more powerful engine, a power moonroof and antilock brakes. Automatic transmission adds $800-$1,000 to most models. (see details on pricing & specifications page.). walkaroundclean, efficient styling reflects the purpose of the honda civic. All three body styles use identical sheet metal from front bumper to windshield. They feature a distinct wedge profile rising from front to rear with large headlights and taillights. Careful detailing lends character to a simple form. some of the details that make the civic appealing are also functional. The low cowl and hood line combine with generous glass area to provide exceptional visibility for driver and passengers. All three civics have large doors, and offer handy access to well-shaped stowage spaces in back. interiorcivic interiors are well-designed, neatly executed and more functional than ostentatious. Interior materials seem to have been selected with durability rather than maximum eye appeal in mind. Civics offer 12 cubic feet of luggage space and that can be augmented by folding down the rear seats. A base civic has but three gauges - speedometer, fuel level and coolant temperature - while up-level models add a tachometer. These are lightweight cars, so even the base 106-horsepower engine is more than sufficient. The uplevel choices are rated at 115 and 127 horsepower. All civic engines use 4-valve-per-cylinder technology (16v) for maximum efficiency. In fact, all are mechanically identical with the exception of those used in ex sedans and coupes and hx coupes. These add a variable valve timing system (called vtec by honda) that makes them extraordinarily responsive at any speed. Regardless of output, civic powerplants are exceptionally smooth and economical. a 5-speed manual transmission - one of the easiest-shifting gearboxes on the market - is standard for all civics. The optional 4-speed automatic uses electronic controls to minimize unnecessary shifting when driving up or down hills. Both transmissions are excellent and suit the high-revving characteristics of all three engines. hx coupe's optional continuously variable belt-drive transmission (cvt). It is a fascinating device controlled by what looks like a normal automatic shift lever with three forward ranges, though only drive is necessary in everyday use. Pull away from a stop and the engine revs faster than the car accelerates. The cvt seems a novelty at first, but after a few miles one begins to wonder why it hasn't replaced the automatic option in all civics. there's nothing lacking in the remainder of the civic's mechanical hardware either. It was comfortable at cruising speeds, boasting a ride that was smooth yet well enough controlled to fend off most pavement irregularities. Road and engine noise are always present, but only become obtrusive during hard acceleration. the driving pleasure really begins when the civic is urged through corners. Especially noteworthy is the power steering. Unlike some systems, the civic's steering does not isolate the driver from the road. Body roll is held to a minimum (the front stabilizer bar fitted to uplevel coupes and sedans really does help). The civic shines in these conditions. All civics are compact, with the largest sedan being just over 14 feet long. If economy is the primary motivator, any will do, with top honors going to the base coupe. Luxury, in a relative sense, is available as well, though the price for a full load of amenities puts the civic up against base versions of larger, more substantial cars. the easy part is deciding to make the civic a primary candidate while small-car shopping. Slam poetry in motion. introductionwhen pontiac first revealed the vibe, it did it with slam poets describing the vehicle's appeal. So this five-door hatchback has a roomy interior, a creative cargo-carrying system and even a standard 110-watt electrical outlet so occupants can plug in a laptop computer or video game unit. However, for the japanese market, toyota simply sells right-hand-drive versions of the pontiac-styled vibe as the toyota voltz. See separate review of the toyota matrix at nctd. Com.). lineupthree models are available: the base vibe 16,900), the vibe gt 19. 900) and the vibe awd 20,100). the base vibe is amazingly well equipped with air conditioning, a cd player, a two-prong household-style power outlet (as well as two standard automotive power outlets), the rear cargo track system with adjustable tie-down anchors, a height-adjustable driver's seat and a rear hatch that features a glass window that can be opened without having to open the entire hatch. He succeeded. note: pontiac is having trouble breaking its habit of surrounding its vehicles with lower-body cladding. But at least the vibe's is relatively plain, and is available in either charcoal or body color (although the body color is a $500 option). We think the charcoal looks best on the all-wheel-drive version, giving it some visual elevation and an off-roady, 4x4 (dare we say outback) look. interiorpontiac vibe provides seating for five, and those seats are elevated for a good view of the road. The person at the wheel can enhance that vantage by taking advantage of the manual height-adjustment controls the driver's seat. the driver operates in a cockpit style environment, and should appreciate some of the nice touches that went into making that environment a pleasant place for driving or even for working. for example, the front passenger's seatback folds flat forward, so its back can serve as a table for the driver to rest a laptop computer or video game system plugged into the 110-volt outlet. Making this process easier are release levers on both sides of that passenger seatback, so the driver can do this operation one-handed; someone standing outside the car on the passenger's side can easily reach in and do the same thing. the rear seat has a 60/40 split (and room for at least two full-size adults) and either or both seatbacks can be folded down, providing a utah-shaped flat floor all the way from the rear hatch to the right half of the dashboard. The vibe can carry more than 57 cubic feet of cargo, which can be secured by using various tie-downs, including those that lock into position in a clever pair of tracks in the rear cargo floor. Those tracks also are built into the rear seatbacks, so they extend the full length of the rear cargo floor. Making the task of manipulating the manual gearbox easier is the way the shifter is mounted in an extension of the dashboard instead of in a center console. Even though the engine produces slightly less horsepower (because of changes in exhaust routing around the awd's independent rear suspension setup), the gearbox responded nicely when we needed it to kick down in passing situations or for pulling onto freeways. (the awd with the automatic gets a smaller fuel tank, poorer fuel economy, and isn't as quick as the five-speed two-wheel drive.) the vibe's engine was a little noisy under acceleration, but the drivetrain quieted nicely at cruising speeds. With a solid chassis, engineers are able to do a good job at sound insulation and ride control. We spent a full day in the vibe and were always comfortable. enhancing the experience are easy to reach and use controls, with the audio system controls at the top of the center stack and with three big dials to control the heat-a/c-ventilation system. the all-wheel-drive system uses lightweight, aluminum components and has a viscous coupling. It usually sends its torque to the front wheels, but can split it 50/50 front/rear when it detects wheel slippage. Pontiac says the vibe gt will rocket from a standing stop to 60 mph in less than 8. 5 seconds (compared to around 9 or 10 seconds for the base car and 11. 5 for the vibe awd). the vibe gt's engine also displaces 1. 8 liters, but has been massaged by yamaha, which shortened the stroke but bored out its cylinders and increased the compression ratio to 11. 5:1 (compared to 10. 0:1 for the version in the vibe and vibe awd). The vibe gt engine needs 92-octane fuel, but the payback is 180 horsepower at 7600 rpm. (ford's much-heralded svt focus has only 170 horsepower.) coupled to the gt's engine is a six-speed manu. Its strong, 200-horsepower v6 delivers quick acceleration performance. It comes with dual sliding doors, and can be trimmed with video systems and other options to satisfy any taste. for eight straight years, the windstar has earned the federal government's best crash-test rating: five stars each for driver and front passenger. With its optional side-impact air bags, windstar achieves a double five-star rating in the government's new side-impact tests as well. Safety is improved further for 2003, as the windstar gets ford's advancetrac electronic stability enhancement system. Advancetrac detects skidding and actively corrects the windstar's heading by selectively applying individual brakes and/or reducing engine power. That could make the difference between a close call and a collision on a rain-slicked or ice-covered road. Additional refinements for 2003 focus on reducing noise. the current windstar is nearing the end of its run, and an all-new windstar is on the horizon. . lineupall windstars come with air conditioning, a 3. 8-liter v6 engine, antilock brakes (abs), electronic brake distribution (edb), and dual airbags. Aerodynamic mirrors, new beltline moldings, and new b-pillar appliques are designed to reduce wind turbulence. Thicker side glass in the front doors and improved sealing in the front bulkhead further insulate the windstar's driver and passengers from wind noise. ford windstar's styling hasn't changed much since its 1995 introduction, but it still looks contemporary. Windstar's front end received a minor redesign in 2001, and the lx standard and deluxe acquired driving lights in 2002. For 2003, all windstars sport body-colored bumpers. the sliding doors neatly hide the tracks below the lower edge of the rear side window, instead of gouging them out of the quarter-panel sheetmetal. This gives the windstar a less utilitarian, more upscale look. It's also nice for folks who find opening and closing heavy doors a bit strenuous. The one shortcoming of the power doors is that they move more slowly than most people could slide the door by hand. Nonetheless, kids love the power doors. A safety feature automatically stops the door should some errant body part block its path. And an industry-first warning strobe alerts the driver when the sliding doors are opening. unlike some of its domestic competitors, windstar is not available in a short-wheelbase model. Windstar comes in one size only, and that size is relatively large, comparable to the dodge grand caravan, the chrysler town & country, and the honda odyssey. . interiorford windstar is as large as the largest minivans, so there's lots of room inside. Kids love the spacious feel, while adults appreciate the generous legroom and headroom, especially in the center bucket seats. The nicely designed and substantial dashboard wraps around the driver, positioning the radio and climate controls within easy reach. Two cup holders are attached to a tray that slides out; spring-loaded sides allow them to accommodate a variety of containers. A convenient wide-angle mirror helps the driver keep an eye on what's going on in the rear seats. we had trouble getting comfortable in the sel. We found the front seats in flat, with little side bolstering. This allows them to sit farther from the steering wheel, for better driving position and to avoid potential injury from the airbag. center-row seats are buckets in se, sel and limited. We found them heavy and awkward to remove. Like the second-row bench it rides on small rollers that make it slightly easier to remove. It weighs about 100 pounds, which makes removal a two-person job. Once back in the van, it moves seven inches fore and aft on its track, allowing more rear luggage space, or more rear-seat legroom, depending on need. However, moving it all the way forward exposes the seat tracks, which are greasy for cargo and not friendly to dogs. the rear bench can also be moved to the second-row seat's attachment points, to provide seating for five and cavernous luggage space. That feature adds to the versatility of windstars equipped with second-row buckets. the third-row seatback folds down to provide a flat table and more cup holders. Rear climate controls come standard (except in the base model), a great feature especially on hot days for children and pets. Se, sel, and limited come standard with rear audio controls as well, allowing kids to play cassettes in the rear while adults listen to the radio up front. a handy feature for entertaining restless rug rats is the auto vision entertainment system 995), consisting of a vhs tape player and a 6. 4-inch lcd video screen that folds down from the overhead console. There are even ports for video games. The system includes a pair of headphones, so people up front do not have to listen to 'land before time 32,' or whatever else is screening in the rear cabin. for busy adults, sel and limited models feature an electronic message center, which is a small voice recorder attached to the driver's sun visor. Unfortunately. driving impressionwith its big v6, the windstar is one of the quickest minivans available.
