2003 ford mustang review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. America's pony car. introductionthe ford mustang is an absolute hoot to drive. The new mach 1 and the cobra deliver brilliant acceleration performance with lots of torque for quickly attaining super-legal speeds. Don't expect sophisticated ride and handling, though. This is a hammer of a car, and it's interior is dated.  mustang's heritage dates back to april 17, 1964, when the first one rolled onto the streets with its long hood, short rear deck, low profile. About 135,000 mustangs were sold in 2002. Ford claims mustang is the best-selling convertible in america (54,783 in 2001). With the chevy camaro and pontiac firebird gone, the ford mustang is the last pony standing. A new mustang is on the horizon, likely to be introduced as a 2005 model.  for 2003, two new special-edition models are available: mach 1 models boast a powerful twin-cam v8, sports suspension, and shaker hood designed to remind us of the famous 1969 fastback. Several new measures are designed to reduce wind noise, the suspension has been retuned, and the v6 and v8 engines get some minor refinements.  . lineupmustang comes in coupe and convertible body styles. Base models come with a v6 engine. High-performance gt models are powered by a v8. Ultra high-performance cobra svt models get a supercharged v8.  base msrps: v6 coupe 17,615); v6 convertible 23,315); gt 23,485); gt convertible 27,790); cobra coupe 33,300); cobra convertible 37,545).  standard equipment on all mustangs includes air conditioning, power windows and door locks, tilt-steering column, a floor console, remote keyless entry system and interval windshield wipers. Reclining cloth front bucket seats are standard, as are 50/50 split-folding rear seatbacks on coupe models. A six-way power driver's seat is available, as are leather-trimmed bucket seats.  the standard mustang engine is a 3. 8-liter v6, an overhead-valve engine rated 190 horsepower at 5250 rpm and 220 foot-pounds of torque at 2750 rpm. Of torque at 4000 rpm. To manage all that power, the gt is equipped with gas-pressure shocks with unique model calibrations, p245/45r17 performance tires on 17-inch alloy painted wheels, a traction loc rear axle, abs and traction control. Gts come with sport bucket seats and fog lamps. Distinguished by its black shaker hood, the mach 1 4885) is a package that includes special 17-inch wheels, special leather-trimmed seats, special interior trim, in-dash six-disc cd stereo, and special exterior graphics.  gt and convertible models offer a premium package 2585) with leather seating surfaces, the mach 460 stereo with in-dash 6-cd changer, and abs and traction control. Convertible models with premium trim come standard with an automatic transmission.  cobra models are massaged by ford's special vehicle team, or svt. The svt v8 produces 390 horsepower at 6000 rpm, with 390 pounds-feet of torque at 3500 rpm. It comes mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. Cobra comes shod with p275/40r17 tires and loaded with special interior and exterior trim.  convertibles feature a power top with a scratch-resistant glass rear window. A black semi-hard boot protects the top and provides a slick top-down appearance.  new safety features for 2003 include a new a-pillar, headliners, sun visors and a revised d-ring seat belt attachment, all designed to offer better head protection in the event of an impact. The firing strategy on both driver and passenger side air bags has been updated. Standard safety equipment includes safety belts with pretensioners to tighten the lap belt and shoulder belts in the first moments of a crash. The rear fender air intake, for example, has sharp corners and pronounced lines; but the rocker panels curve out, and the fenders have pronounced front and rear wheel well arches. The front end features wraparound complex reflector headlamps with integrated side marker lamps, combined with a square-edged honeycomb grille and a chrome pony. Tricolor front fender badges recall the good old days, as does the prominent but non-functional hood scoop. In back, it's 1965 with vertical, three-element taillamps.  gt models get unique hood and side-scoop treatments, along with fog lights and a rear spoiler.  mach 1 is easy to spot with special trim that starts with its shaker hood scoop. Attached directly to the top of the engine, the black scoop rears its head through a squarish hole in the mach 1 hood. (hood scoops on gt models sit on top of the hood.) a bold low-gloss black stripe runs up the center of the powerdome hood to accentuate the scoop. In theory, the scoop is designed to channel fresh air into the intake for increased breathing and, therefore, increased power.  cobra is distinguished from the other models by a unique front and rear appearance package. Its raised hood is required to make room for the supercharger setup. Two rear-facing vents near the leading edge of the hood are designed to let hot air out of the engine bay. Cobra is further distinguished by its unique grille opening, front bumper, driving lamps, rocker panels and side scoops, rear-end treatment, and 17-inch five-spoke alloy wheels in either brushed or chromed finish.  . interiorthe mustang has good, reclining bucket seats with plenty of travel. Seatbelts are attached to the seat frames so they move with the seats.  the interior is cozy, with enough seat-track length to accommodate tall drivers and just enough elbowroom to keep from feeling cramped. Convertibles and coupes offer about the same space in the front seats.  the back seat is small, with only enough room for small objects or kids. Convertibles offer less hip and shoulder room than coupes, but about the same headroom and legroom.  the trunk is small with an even smaller opening. Coupes hold just under 11 cubic feet worth of cargo, while convertibles hold just 7. 7 cubic feet. A split fold-down rear seat is standard on all models and handy for hauling cargo. A glow-in-the-dark safety latch has been added inside the trunks of all mustang models designed to prevent kids getting locked in the trunks.  the federal government gives the mustang a five-star rating for front passenger safety, its highest. Only the two frontal air bags are available, however, there are no side air bags.  leather upholstery is standard in the premium gt, optional in some other models. Running horses embossed on the upper portions of the seat backrests recall the deluxe pony interior of the mid-1960s.  the mach 1 tachometer and speedometer use a tall condensed typeface and more hash marks that make it harder to read than the gauges in the gt models. The instrument panel, center console and headliner are color-keyed. To turn on the headlights, pull out an old-fashioned knob on the left. The center console includes cup holders.  svt cobra models offer front bucket seats with nudo leather trim and suede inserts. The driver's seat features six-way power with power-adjustable thigh and side bolsters, and power lumbar support. Clearly, these seats are made for serious, fast driving. Switches are on the right-front corner of the seat. The svt instrument cluster has been redesigned to include a boost gauge. The gauges feature titanium-colored faces and electroluminescent lighting. The cobra's gearshift knob is leather-wrapped, with a brushed-aluminum insert on the top, inscribed with the six-speed pattern. Metal-trimmed pedals and dead pedal are standard.  . driving impressiona 300-mile drive in a gt convertible was a reminder that the mustang is a throwback to another era, but still a very enjoyable car. Sporty sedan based on european accord. introductionthe acura tsx is a responsive sports sedan with front-wheel drive. The tip-offs for its sporty demeanor start with the name. Acura calls its sports-specialty vehicles the rsx, tsx, and nsx. Road cars are named cl, tl, rl. The tsx is acura's response to the bmw 3 series and audi a4.  the tsx is based on the european-market honda accord, which is a different car and slightly smaller than the accord designed for the u. It's a superb chassis that's tight and fun to drive. This engine is wonderfully tuned and loves to rev.  the result is immediate throttle response followed by a rapid acquisition of speed. That throttle is actually a drive-by-wire accelerator. The six-speed manual gearbox is notably sweet, smooth and quick. The alternative is a five-speed automatic with sequential sport shift. The suspension dances to the tune of a european sports sedan. The brakes scrub off triple-digit speeds without drama and the pedals are set up well for effortless heel-and-toe braking and downshifting. For an enthusiast, the acura tsx eliminates the lust for european-market cars.  new for 2005 is the a-spec, a sport package available from acura dealers. lineupthe 2005 acura tsx model line presents few dilemmas: simply choose between the six-speed manual gearbox or a five-speed automatic with sequential sport shift. Both models are the same price 26,990). Standard equipment includes perforated leather seating, moonroof, hid headlights, and 360-watt acura premium audio system with six-disc cd changer and eight speakers. For 2005, xm satellite radio hardware is standard, but requires a subscription.  safety features include vehicle stability assist (vsa) with traction control and side curtain airbags.  a-spec 4,330) adds high-performance shocks and springs, lightweight 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped with michelin pilot all-season performance tires, and an aero kit featuring an air dam, chin spoiler, side skirts and a choice of deck lid or wing spoiler. The kit is installed by dealerships. S.) the tsx features a different grille, bumper fascia and headlights. The nose is clean and sharp. The headlights are more narrow and horizontal than the european accord's, streaking aggressively back along each fender.  invisible to the eye are aerodynamic undertrays, strategic bellypans that help bring the coefficient of drag down to an impressive 0. 27 for the tsx. The backlight (rear window) slopes to meet a short trunk lid, which helps air separate cleanly off the back of the car at speed.  the seven-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels complement the clean lines, and the p215/50r17 tires are low-profile but not radical. Discreet business-like chrome exhaust tips are tucked under the rear fascia at each edge and give the car attitude. Honda accord is 187. 6 inches long with a wheelbase of 105 inches. interiorthe acura tsx interior feels graceful. The seat fits great and there's good legroom. The rubber-coated pedals feel good, and there's a solid dead pedal. The 8000-rpm tach is as big as the 160-mph speedo, because the tsx is all about using the tach. The bright red needles give it just the right neon touch. There's a tidy three-spoke steering wheel, wrapped skin-tight in perforated leather, just small enough. The shift knob is right, blending function and style with leather and polished aluminum, without compromising the function. A fingertip away is a 360-watt sound system with a six-cd player. It's easy to program, and gives clear, accurate instructions visibly and audibly. The display is big and crisp. The system uses a combination of hard buttons and context-sensitive on-screen menus. The system also takes voice commands. Fact is, with the acura tsx it really is 'get' to change gears, not 'have' to change gears. It's useful at 3600 rpm/40 mph, all the way up to about 75 mph. The acceleration is linear from the drop of the gas pedal, without strain or surge. But smooth power delivery comes mostly from the i-vtec engine, using honda's latest variable valve timing and lift system.  it's a wonderfully tuned engine. Never got the good cars. European drivers appreciated good handing more than we did, so they got the cars with the tightest suspensions, at the least. They got more powerful engines too, often because of lower environmental standards. But nowadays that's much less true. The tsx is the state of the art of building the perfect little european sports sedan (never mind that it's japanese), as revealed by the suspension. Double a-arms support the front, with a multi-link system in the rear. It's heavy for its size, but it's delicate to handle. It's sweet, but not touchy. We would have liked some aural attitude commensurate with the engine's capability and the tailpipes' promise.  the suspension says no sweat to patchy roads. It swallows the worst of it with no bouncing or tipping or jolting. It usually takes a softer suspension to deliver a comfortable ride on roads like this. The suspension's combination of firm for the curves and comfortable on the street is exceptional. It can get a little twitchy on uneven surfaces at very high speeds, though. We pushed the tsx through some curves, and it came out the other end flying its colors. Understeer is minimal. The broad range of third gear again was useful, tremendous, even. 2002 chevrolet suburban review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Can't beat the 'burb. introductionthis is the best vehicle to buy for anyone who needs to haul six or more people and cargo at the same time. Six or more people can travel in comfort, even in the third-row seat. And there's still room for stuff in back. Fold the seats down and this thing will move a mountain of cargo. It's a great companion for long trips, even when towing a hefty trailer.  the least-expensive base model is gone, but the chevrolet suburban continues to provide excellent value in a jumbo package. The suburban was totally redesigned and re-engineered for 2000 and arrived with more powerful engines, a more rigid frame, re-engineered suspension that provided excellent handling, improved brakes and an upgraded interior.  the vehicle was vastly improved, and the improvements continued last year with even more horsepower for the 2500 model's standard 6. 0-liter v8 engine and with a new 8. 1-liter v8 available. Two trim levels are available: ls and lt. Suburban 1500s come equipped with a 5. 3-liter v8. The 2500s are available with a choice of 6. 0-liter or 8. 1-liter v8s.  in two-wheel drive, the ls starts at $35,443 and the lt at $38,209. It was completely redesigned for 2000, which gave it a smoother and more aerodynamic look. Sharp edges were rounded. New headlights gave it a more contemporary appearance. But there was no mistaking the 'burb.  two tailgate configurations are available. A lightweight, one-piece rear hatch similar to those found on compact suvs is useful for families and can be opened with one hand. Chevrolet lists it as a no-cost option. Cargo doors are also useful when pulling trailers because they will usually clear the trailer tongue jack. And i like them because it's easier to control my dog when i open them. The hinges have been re-engineered for a more finished appearance; and they let the doors open wide without having to disconnect the hinges.  a puddle lamp mounted below the side mirrors shines down to light up the perimeter of the suburban. It's a nice feature that can be turned on using the keyless remote when approaching the suburban in a dark parking garage, as it illuminates underneath the vehicle. The third-row seatback folds down without having to remove the headrests, then the whole thing flips forward to substantially increase cargo capacity. A short prop rod locks it into place. This bench seat can be easily removed as it's mounted on wheels; it weighs 75 pounds, however, so get some help before pulling it out the back end of the suburban. Loading cargo is easy because there's plenty of space for it; lift-over height is lower than that of the ford excursion. Lt's leather seats seem more supportive. The second row is quite comfortable. Headphone jacks allow rear-seat passengers to listen to cds while those up front turn on the radio. Getting back there requires folding and flipping the seat out of the way.  though my height-challenged mother-in-law found getting into the suburban a bit of a step up, it isn't a problem for those of standard stature. Step-in height is actually lower than before because of the new fully boxed frame. She liked the running boards, which make getting in easier. driving impressionride quality in the suburban 1500 is smooth, greatly improved over the previous-generation suburban. The optional premium ride suspension features a hydraulically controlled rear self-leveling system to keep the suburban at normal ride height even when carrying heavy loads. This system offered a good ride quality on the suburban i drove.  the more sophisticated optional autoride suspension system uses computer-controlled shock damping for improved ride quality over uneven pavement. Whether towing a horse trailer or picking up a soccer team, autoride continually adjusts the suspension for optimum ride and handling. This technology also helps reduce dive on braking (so that the nose of the vehicle doesn't dip down unduly), and body roll (or lean) during cornering. Driving quickly over wet pavement on mountain roads, we never lost traction. We drove into wet turns as quickly as we'd ever want to go in a suburban and never lost grip. The frame is completely re-engineered. The entire front part of the frame is hydro-formed from one piece of metal and is far more rigid than a bunch of pieces welded together.  the 2500 models, often referred to as the 3/4-ton versions, are only needed for those who tow heavy trailers. Rated to tow up to 10,500 pounds, they effectively match the towing capacity of the ford excursion. Suburban 2500 will ride a bit harsher because its rear suspension uses leaf springs instead of the coil-springs used on the 1500. But the 2500 rides surprisingly well, given its load range, a big improvement over the previous-generation 2500 models and smoother than the big ford excursion.  until 2000, suburbans came with mushy brakes. Gm redesigned the brake system to address this. The pedal now works smoothly and progressively, which makes is easier to stop without drama. A dynamic rear proportioning system modulates the pressure applied to the rear brakes for more effective braking. Brake pads and rotors are 40 percent larger and use twin-piston calipers. Those in the sunbelt may not see justification for it. If conditions are fluctuating, hit the auto 4wd button and the autotrac all-wheel-drive system automatically transfers power from a slipping wheel to the wheels with the best traction; no input is needed from the driver.  the 2500's 6. 0-liter v8 has aluminum heads and last year got a revised camshaft that helps it produce a nice, round 300 horsepower. We haven't tried the new 8. 1-liter v8, but responsiveness from either the 5. 3 or 6. 0 is excellent.  suburban's automatic transmission comes with a tow/haul mode. Pressing a switch on the end of the column shifter changes the shift points of the transmission. The tow/haul mode improves performance while towing and lessens wear on the transmission. Even when not towing, it works well when driving through mountainous terrain. summarywe love the 'burb. It's a great vehicle for moving cargo, towing trailers, or hauling people. 2006 mazda mazda6 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Sporty and fun. introductionimproved for 2006, the mazda 6 is the sports sedan of front-drive midsize cars. While the toyota camry and honda accord are designed for mass appeal or, stated more cynically, for people who don't like cars, the mazda 6 is designed for the driving enthusiast. Mazda6, as the company calls it, is not for everyone, and that's just fine with mazda.  the mazda 6 looks leaner than its competitors and the driving experience backs that up with agile handling and responsive engines. The mazda 6 feels tighter in corners and holds the road better than camry, accord or nissan altima. It's lighter on its feet and stops quicker. In short, it's a better driver's car. The 5-door excels at carrying cargo, yet it doesn't look like a hatchback; in fact, it takes a sharp eye to distinguish it from the sedan. Mild styling revisions give it a cleaner look. New front seats are designed for greater comfort and support, new cloth fabrics, a new center console, new door panels, and other features make the cabin more comfortable and more convenient. The brakes have been upgraded for 2006 with bigger ventilated front disc brakes designed to reduce stopping distances, resist brake fade and improve pedal feel. Also, 18-inch wheels and tires are available.  the new 2006 mazdaspeed6 is a turbocharged, all-wheel-drive sedan carefully tuned by mazda's performance division. All-wheel drive helps tame its 274-horsepower turbocharged engine, its close-ratio six-speed manual gearbox is remarkable for its easy, smooth-shifting action, and its suspension is firm but not unbearably so. It comes with sporty fabric or leather upholstery and other luxury features. Several levels of trim are available. Visually, it has more personality than the accord and other midsize cars. It has a strong front-end treatment that's consistent with other mazdas. Cat's-eye headlamps and big, multi-element tail lamps enhance the action at each corner of the car.  the mazda 6 benefits from a kind of muscular conservatism inside and out. Everything in, on and under this car makes sense, and it all looks good doing it. The relationship of the lower body to the upper body looks perfect, yet the roof shape is designed for people, not for style. Its sporty profile makes the mazda 6 look smaller than it is.  2006 brings some styling revisions to the mazda 6 line. New headlamps, revised tail lamps, new front and rear bumper fascia, and new side sills add more edge to the styling. Fog lamps are incorporated into the front spoiler. A new sport grille, dark gray headlamp bezels, and a rear spoiler add distinction for top-line models. Also, 18-inch wheels have been added to the options list. Bright island blue and tungsten gray have been added to the color palette for 2006, and we really liked the new dark cherry, which will be mistaken for black in some lighting conditions.  the shape of the mazda 6 is truly fetching when painted a hot color and accented by sport-level trim, which includes a body-color front grille, gray headlight bezels, clear-lens halogen fog lamps, dual oval exhaust outlets, front and rear air dams, and side sill extensions. The outside door handles are well designed and easy to grab.  the 5-door hatchback features an extended rear roof pillar sloping rearward into a raised deck lid. As mazda says, it looks fast even when standing still. Casual observers may not notice the difference between the 5-door and the sedan.  the sport wagon looks sleek, clean and aggressive, if not as overtly sporty as the hatchback.  the new mazdaspeed6 is distinguished by its slightly lowered stance and by its exclusive front fenders, hood, and grille, among other body panels. An aerodynamic front bumper and lower grille section hint at high performance, while flared side skirts draw attention to 18-inch aluminum wheels. The wagon has a stiffer chassis than the 5-door due to the large rear opening of the hatchback. A stiff chassis is a key element to achieving sharp handling and a smooth ride. interiorthe front seats of the mazda 6 are comfortable through a wide range of adjustments and have been improved for 2006. We found them suitable for hard driving, with good upper body support and enough lower back support with the optional lumbar adjuster for all-day comfort. The leather package adds cowhide to all the right places, with thankful perforations on the seating surfaces.  the mazda 6 interior is designed to be comfortable for front and rear passengers in the 95th percentile of all body shapes. The rear seats are quite comfortable, whether in the sedan, hatchback or wagon.
