All of the trim materials exude a high-quality look and feel. The standard steering wheel and shift lever are covered with stitched leather and look very nice. An all-walnut handle for the shift lever and a walnut-trimmed steering wheel are available for an even more prestigious appearance. Regardless, the steering column is manually adjustable for tilt. the standard leather upholstery is quite nice and is available in ivory, charcoal, or black. The seats are very comfortable and the seating position is excellent, with lots of front-seat legroom. Optional power-adjustable pedals are a good idea for shorter drivers because they help them to find a good driving position without sitting too close to the airbag-equipped steering wheel. The seats are relatively flat, without large bolsters, making getting in and out easier. The driver's seat comes standard with 10-way power adjustments. On sporty se models, the grille is blacked out. like the sedan, the solara looks rounder and more massive than the previous-generation model, and it is in fact larger. Solara shares the sedan's 107-inch wheelbase, but is 3. 3 inches longer overall than the camry, measuring 192. 5 inches from bumper to bumper. the solara coupe looks like a stylized version of the sedan. It's a more adventurous design. The roofline is sleeker and the rear is totally different from the camry sedan's, reminding us of the lexus sc 430. The arc-shaped theme features a continuous line from the front bumper, over the roof, and down to the rear bumper. Just below the beltline, a character line flows in a gentle s-curve from the teardrop headlamps to the teardrop taillights. The solara looks aerodynamically efficient, and it is, with a drag coefficient of just 0. 29 cd, making it slip through the air much more easily than the previous solara, good for wind noise, gas mileage, and speed. The outside door handles are easy to grab, much better than lever-style handles. toyota says the convertible's body structure was designed from the ground up for topless motoring, unlike the previous-generation convertible, which was adapted from the then-current coupe. The solara was designed and engineered in the u. And is built in the u. S. interiorthe toyota camry has a comfortable interior with controls that are straightforward and easy to operate. Everything is laid out simply. Optional power-adjustable pedals help shorter drivers find a safer, more comfortable driving position, moving the pedals closer to them and permitting them to move farther from the airbag-armed steering wheel. radio and climate controls are mounted high in the center of the dash for easy access. Three big knobs mounted prominently in the center of the dashboard are used to manually control heating, ventilation, and air conditioning on base, se and le models. Xle models get automatic climate controls with a smooth tactile feel that reminds us of lexus, which set the modern standard. The stereo uses big tuning and volume knobs and big buttons that make it easy to operate, whether scanning for radio stations or moving between songs on a cd. We found the audio quality on the available jbl sound system a bit lacking, however. we found the optional navigation system easy to use, easier than system on expensive european cars, and it recalculates quickly. the instruments are located in a relatively small pod directly in front of the steering wheel, with a large half-moon tachometer and matching speedometer. The fuel and temperature gauges are located within the two larger instruments. Lights and windshield wiper/washer controls are on stalks on the steering column, leaving the left lower edge of the dash free of switches. the camry dashboard is relatively plain, with no large curved surfaces, and it is set relatively high. The dash blends nicely into the door panels, but the cover for the passenger-side air bag is noticeable as the seams show clearly. Many other manufacturers have made the passenger-side air bag invisible. a wide center console separates the two front bucket seats and contains useful storage areas. It would not be an overstatement to call 2004 the best model year for full-size pickups in the history of the automobile. The competition is better than ever, but so is the ram, which stands tall among its competitors. completely redesigned and re-engineered for the 2002 model year, this latest-generation dodge ram boasts high levels of refinement and comfort. It's smoother and more comfortable than the previous-generation models. Its interior is more convenient than before and the bold exterior styling looks terrific. Changes for 2004 only improve the ram's impressive towing and hauling capabilities. a new hemi v8 engine brings more power and efficiency to the dodge ram line of pickups. Added late during the 2003 model year, the 5. 7-liter hemi replaces the old 5. 9-liter v8, increasing power by 100 horsepower and 40 pounds-feet of torque while improving fuel economy by 10 percent. Dodge claims the hemi makes the ram 1500 lineup the most powerful mass-production light-duty pickup on the market. More important than claims, it is an exceptionally good engine, smooth and very responsive. Adding to the responsiveness of this engine is a new five-speed automatic transmission. The laramie trim package has been upgraded for 2004, and new options have been added, including a bluetooth-enabled cellular telephone. lineupdodge ram is available with two cab configurations, regular cab and quad cab (no extended cab). Quad cab models ride on a wheelbase that's 20 inches longer than comparable regular cab models. Therefore, a long-bed quad cab is a long truck, long on roominess and utility, but not the easiest to turn around. Long-bed rams also get a bigger fuel tank, 35 gallons in place of the standard 26-gallon tank. Long beds add $300-$350 to the price. three engines are offered: most popular is the 4. 7-liter v8, a modern overhead-cam engine. The most powerful engine in the line is the new 5. 7-liter hemi v8, which uses with hemispherical combustion chambers for improved airflow and burn. The new hemi produces 345 horsepower and 375 foot-pounds of torque. When properly equipped, that increases the towing capacity to 9200 pounds and payload by an additional 500 pounds. An integrated air dam aids engine cooling and air conditioner performance. the standard bed length is 6 feet, 3 inches, but an 8-foot bed is available for both quad cab and regular cab models. The longest model is the quad cab with 8-foor bed, which rides on a 160. 5-inch wheelbase; that's 20 inches longer than short-bed quad cab or long-bed regular cab models, which increases the turning diameter by 6 feet; but it's just 3 inches longer than ford and chevy long-bed extended-cab models. That's seems high when trying to heave heavy gear aboard. the most noticeable exterior feature of the new 2004 dodge ram srt-10 is a unique hood that features a wide power bulge and scoop sitting atop the signature cross-hair grille. interiorthe dodge ram is among the roomiest of the full-size pickups and its cab is a pleasant place to be. Dodge added 3 inches to the cab's total length when the ram was redesigned for 2002, stealing that space from the bed. The narrow center section features a large fold-down armrest with a compartment big enough to hold a laptop. We've found both the cloth and the leather seats comfortable, though they could use more support on the side bolsters. Laramie models get an updated interior for 2004, with silver trim adorning the door panels and instrument bezels. Laramie comes with distinctive leather trim, with new, higher contrast color seat inserts. we've found the interior materials in rams to be good quality overall, though all is not perfect in truckville. The faux wood trim on the center stack reminds us of plastic. On leather-trimmed models, cloth is used on the inboard seat-bottom trim where leather would have offered a cleaner appearance. The cup holders can be fussy. However, the ram interior is quite nice and shows attention to details that add utility and convenience. The big fold-down center armrest/console comes with adjustable dividers and a power outlet. New midsize sedan gets new name. introductionthe fiat/chrysler design and engineering teams have created a new midsize car called the chrysler 200 as the replacement for the outgoing chrysler sebring. as its name signifies, the chrysler 200 falls just under the larger chrysler 300 in size and price, as chrysler renews its entire product line in order to be more competitive in the marketplace. the front-wheel-drive chrysler 200 seats five. It competes with the ford fusion, chevrolet malibu, nissan altima, and toyota camry in america's largest market segment, the midsize sedans (collectively 1. 6 million sales per year). the outgoing sebring was singularly unsuccessful everywhere except in rental fleets, so to improve sales chrysler made the 200 look much bolder and sportier than previous sebring models. There's a redone suspension and an improved braking system. The lx is designed for companies or families who want basic transportation and good value. The new 200 is much prettier. The car is more refined than before throughout. It's much quieter underway. The cabin is more modern and the materials are more luxurious in appearance and to the touch. Performance from the v6 is excellent, and the handling is sharp. the new chrysler 200 convertible arrives spring 2011. We expect the chrysler 200 convertible to be a big improvement over the sebring convertible, and, if so, it will be very popular. The sebring, bad as it was, was once the best-selling convertible in the country, and offered both soft-top and steel hardtop versions. we're also expecting an s version of the 200, with the v6 engine and 6-speed automatic standard, its own front and rear appearance, its own interior design, and an s instrument panel package. There's a six-speaker boston acoustics upgrade 475), the uconnect voice-operated phone system, remote starting, a block heater for cold climates 95), and a smoker's package. (all new car test drive prices are manufacturer's suggested retail prices, which do not include destination charge and may change at any time without notice.) safety equipment on the chrysler 200 includes front, side and roof curtain air bags, and abs disc brakes with electronic brake-force distribution (ebd) and brake assist, traction control, and electronic stability control, in addition to the mandated tire-pressure monitor. walkaroundthe new chrysler 200 looks like a sedan version of the 2011 town & country minivan, with many of the same visual cues in the grille, headlamps, air intakes and front bumper. chrysler 200 is much sleeker and more rounded at the nose, but carries about the same aerodynamic drag coefficient as the outgoing sebring, even though the front end has been lowered 12 millimeters and the rear end six millimeters. at the rear, there's a cross-car chrome bar between the new led taillamps and another chrome bar down between the exhaust outlets that serve to widen the look of the car. All chrysler models will have a new wing logo in brushed metal and blue paint to replace the old traditional wing logo and signify the birth of yet another version of chrysler. the roof and doors of the chrysler 200 came from the sebring, but the entire nose, decklid, rear fascia, interior and chassis have been replaced with better and more modern stuff, the new car has very large, fully integrated halogen headlamp units that flow around the front corner into the fender, creating a line that goes up over the heavily bulging front fender like other chryslers and then all the way to the rear of the car through the centerline of the body. interestingly, there is no decklid badging on any of the 200s to indicate which model is which. The instrument panel, center stack, switches and controls have all been redone for the 2011 models. although the seat coverings have been redesigned for a more luxurious feel and appearance, the interior cube is the same as the outgoing sebring, just over 100 cubic feet. as for storage, the rated cargo capacity of the chrysler 200 is 13. 6 cubic feet. the instrument panel contains the usual three-round-gauge package, and is much more pleasing to the eye after the 2011 redesign, with gray-on-gray graphics and white accent lighting that is brilliantly legible at night when the display remains gray on gray. The center portion of the instrument panel has also been modernized and treated to just enough chrome accents, as has the console and shifter portion lower down than before. On some models, it is possible to have two usb ports, which can be quite handy for phone and laptop charging. The cheap rental-car interior has been banished forever. the three-spoke steering wheel has a nice, thick leather-wrapped rim and a thickly padded three-sided hub flanked by redundant switches for the sound system on the left and the cruise control system on the right. all the materials in the seats, door trim panels, headliner and instrument panel are softer, more luxurious and more pleasing to the eye, and the seats feel much more supportive and long-drive comfortable than before. driving impressionthe standard engine for the new chrysler 200 is the 173-horsepower, 166 foot-pounds 2. 4-liter world engine that chrysler shares with two other car companies. Three old v6 engines, the 3. 3, the 3. 8, and the 4. 0-liter, have been retired and replaced by the new corporate 3. 6-liter pentastar v6, which puts out 283 horsepower and 260 foot-pounds of torque, coupled to a 6-speed automatic transmission. They revalved all the shock absorbers, stiffened the front springs by 15 percent, added a rear stabilizer bar where there was none on the previous model, and stiffened the front and rear subframe mounts by 400 and 70 percent, respectively, and the front subframe about 200 percent vertically. The tires have been upgraded to the new quiet-running michelin primacy and upsized from 215 to 225 size. The 200 has much-improved noise, vibration and harshnes. These include a bin under the front passenger seat, storage under the floor in the second row and behind the last row of seats, a dual glove box with dodge's chill zone that cools soda cans, and all the usual cubbies up front, including a fairly deep center console. While the sxt is the value leader, the r/t has a few appealing interior and exterior touches. The se is exclusively front-wheel drive (fwd), while the sxt and r/t models are offered with fwd or all-wheel drive. The sxt and r/t models use chrysler's 3. 5-liter v6. It's basically a stretched, widened and strengthened version of the global c platform that underpins the dodge avenger and chrysler sebring. It's also related to the platform that is the basis for the dodge caliber, jeep patriot and jeep compass. In a vacuum, the look might be described as bold. Actually, it runs the full width of the vehicle and is flanked on either side by integrated fog lights on the r/t model (fog lights are optional on other models). The roofline flows nicely from the windshield, curving down slightly front to rear. The taillights themselves feature two 'war paint' chrome stripes and the tailgate is made out of a composite material to reduce weight. The rear bumper has an integrated step pad that matches the height of the load floor. In overall dimension, it is only slightly shorter than the ford explorer, and it's actually longer than such seven-passenger crossover competitors as the toyota highlander, subaru tribeca and hyundai veracruz. It's about six inches shorter than the pacifica. While there is still evidence of the cheap plastic that has plagued recent dodge releases, there are also more soft-touch materials that look and feel more substantial than those of the dodge caliber, for instance. The improvement is most evident in the r/t model, which has a black dash center section that, while plastic, looks good and feels better than the plastic center stack in the se and sxt models. that center stack contains an easy-to-use climate control system with three knobs and eight buttons. The radio can be a little complicated, especially when ordered with the available mygig infotainment system, which includes a navigation system and a hard drive to hold songs, pictures and map information. The radio and navigation controls are set low, with many buttons that will take some time to learn.
