New midsize sedan gets new name. introductionthe fiat/chrysler design and engineering teams have created a new midsize car called the chrysler 200 as the replacement for the outgoing chrysler sebring. as its name signifies, the chrysler 200 falls just under the larger chrysler 300 in size and price, as chrysler renews its entire product line in order to be more competitive in the marketplace. the front-wheel-drive chrysler 200 seats five. It competes with the ford fusion, chevrolet malibu, nissan altima, and toyota camry in america's largest market segment, the midsize sedans (collectively 1. 6 million sales per year). the outgoing sebring was singularly unsuccessful everywhere except in rental fleets, so to improve sales chrysler made the 200 look much bolder and sportier than previous sebring models. There's a redone suspension and an improved braking system. The lx is designed for companies or families who want basic transportation and good value. The new 200 is much prettier. The car is more refined than before throughout. It's much quieter underway. The cabin is more modern and the materials are more luxurious in appearance and to the touch. Performance from the v6 is excellent, and the handling is sharp. the new chrysler 200 convertible arrives spring 2011. We expect the chrysler 200 convertible to be a big improvement over the sebring convertible, and, if so, it will be very popular. The sebring, bad as it was, was once the best-selling convertible in the country, and offered both soft-top and steel hardtop versions. we're also expecting an s version of the 200, with the v6 engine and 6-speed automatic standard, its own front and rear appearance, its own interior design, and an s instrument panel package. There's a six-speaker boston acoustics upgrade 475), the uconnect voice-operated phone system, remote starting, a block heater for cold climates 95), and a smoker's package. (all new car test drive prices are manufacturer's suggested retail prices, which do not include destination charge and may change at any time without notice.) safety equipment on the chrysler 200 includes front, side and roof curtain air bags, and abs disc brakes with electronic brake-force distribution (ebd) and brake assist, traction control, and electronic stability control, in addition to the mandated tire-pressure monitor. walkaroundthe new chrysler 200 looks like a sedan version of the 2011 town & country minivan, with many of the same visual cues in the grille, headlamps, air intakes and front bumper. chrysler 200 is much sleeker and more rounded at the nose, but carries about the same aerodynamic drag coefficient as the outgoing sebring, even though the front end has been lowered 12 millimeters and the rear end six millimeters. at the rear, there's a cross-car chrome bar between the new led taillamps and another chrome bar down between the exhaust outlets that serve to widen the look of the car. All chrysler models will have a new wing logo in brushed metal and blue paint to replace the old traditional wing logo and signify the birth of yet another version of chrysler. the roof and doors of the chrysler 200 came from the sebring, but the entire nose, decklid, rear fascia, interior and chassis have been replaced with better and more modern stuff, the new car has very large, fully integrated halogen headlamp units that flow around the front corner into the fender, creating a line that goes up over the heavily bulging front fender like other chryslers and then all the way to the rear of the car through the centerline of the body. interestingly, there is no decklid badging on any of the 200s to indicate which model is which. The instrument panel, center stack, switches and controls have all been redone for the 2011 models. although the seat coverings have been redesigned for a more luxurious feel and appearance, the interior cube is the same as the outgoing sebring, just over 100 cubic feet. as for storage, the rated cargo capacity of the chrysler 200 is 13. 6 cubic feet. the instrument panel contains the usual three-round-gauge package, and is much more pleasing to the eye after the 2011 redesign, with gray-on-gray graphics and white accent lighting that is brilliantly legible at night when the display remains gray on gray. The center portion of the instrument panel has also been modernized and treated to just enough chrome accents, as has the console and shifter portion lower down than before. On some models, it is possible to have two usb ports, which can be quite handy for phone and laptop charging. The cheap rental-car interior has been banished forever. the three-spoke steering wheel has a nice, thick leather-wrapped rim and a thickly padded three-sided hub flanked by redundant switches for the sound system on the left and the cruise control system on the right. all the materials in the seats, door trim panels, headliner and instrument panel are softer, more luxurious and more pleasing to the eye, and the seats feel much more supportive and long-drive comfortable than before. driving impressionthe standard engine for the new chrysler 200 is the 173-horsepower, 166 foot-pounds 2. 4-liter world engine that chrysler shares with two other car companies. Three old v6 engines, the 3. 3, the 3. 8, and the 4. 0-liter, have been retired and replaced by the new corporate 3. 6-liter pentastar v6, which puts out 283 horsepower and 260 foot-pounds of torque, coupled to a 6-speed automatic transmission. They revalved all the shock absorbers, stiffened the front springs by 15 percent, added a rear stabilizer bar where there was none on the previous model, and stiffened the front and rear subframe mounts by 400 and 70 percent, respectively, and the front subframe about 200 percent vertically. The tires have been upgraded to the new quiet-running michelin primacy and upsized from 215 to 225 size. The 200 has much-improved noise, vibration and harshnes. Aimed primarily at the chauffeur-driven executive class, the long-wheelbase version offer a cavernous back seat, th more leg room than just about anything on the road. It's great for tall folks or anyone who likes space and convenience and can be equipped with custom features such as writing tables and foot rests. the chrysler 300 is rear-wheel drive, and we consider that a benefit. Rear-wheel drive adds to the pleasure and excitement of driving this big sedan, and that's partly why luxury sedans and sports cars continue to use it. The 300's traction and stability electronics are well sorted and effective, delivering good all-season performance, and all-wheel drive is an option for those who live in the snow belt. They're also responsive for large cars. Inside and out, this car makes no apologies. It won't be mistaken for any other sedan the road. The all-new 2005 chrysler 300 is the first big rear-wheel-drive sedan to come out of chrysler in many years. It replaces the front-wheel-drive lh line, which chrysler has used for years. Back then, there were engineering cases for front-wheel drive, including reduced manufacturing costs and more compact packaging. But new technology has made rear-wheel drive preferable again. Traction control, electronic stability programs, anti-lock brakes, and electronic brake distribution all improve the driver's ability to control the car. And one thing hasn't changed: rear-wheel drive is much better than front-wheel drive for managing horsepower. The 300c, which comes with a 340-horsepower hemi v8, is too powerful for front-wheel drive. the 300 might be a case of back to the future, but there's little that's retro about it, except maybe the giant grille, with a shape like the 1958 300c. There have been some successful chrysler 300s along the way, but nothing to match the impact of the '55. one of the advantages of front-wheel drive is traction in snow, but that too has been erased over the years. All-wheel drive will be available for drivers who want more traction. the chrysler 300's styling is distinctive, and its interior is roomy, efficient and stylish. The instrument panel and switchgear are easy to read and operate. Pieces of mercedes-benz are slipping into chrysler cars nowadays, and the 300c features a mercedes-like steering wheel, leather under an arc of wood at the top. while the 5. 7-liter hemi grabs the headlines, there are 2. 7- and 3. 5-liter v6 engines available. A standard chrysler 300 with a 2. 7-liter v6 can be had for the eye-popping low price of $23,595 including destination. It's a large, modern, stylish, comfortable car for a small price. The 340-horsepower hemi has to carry 4046 pounds, so it won't run with a corvette, but it is plenty fast, with a 0-60 time of 6. 3 seconds, according to chrysler. At the same time, the ride is smooth, solid and comfortable and the cabin is very quiet. With a base price less than $33,000, that's a killer car. lineupthere are three engines available: a 2. 7-liter v6, a 3. 5-liter v6, and the 5. 7-liter v8 hemi. The base chrysler 300 22,970) comes with a 2. 7-liter double-overhead-cam v6 engine making 190 horsepower and 190 feet-pounds of torque, and getting 21/28 epa miles per gallon. It gets 17/25 mpg on 89 octane recommended (87 acceptable). It also has bigger and more powerful front brakes, because the engine is some 300 pounds heavier than the v6 and the car is considerably faster. But mostly the styling is uncompromising and makes no apologies. Rear-wheel-drive architecture allowed this whole new shape. The wheelwell cutouts, wrapping around five-spoke 17-inch or 10-spoke 18-inch wheels, are striking. The wheelbase is very long but the overhangs are short, offering a visual sense of power. The roof rakes thickly down to a short deck, and the sides are like large slabs. The long hood glides forward and drops off a cliff whose face is the massive grille, so strong it dictates the car's lines. interiorthe interior of the chrysler 300 is marked by spacious silence. Chrysler engineers have been reducing interior and wind noise with all their new vehicles, so it's not surprising that the flagship sedan should get the treatment. Chrysler has its own $36 million aero-acoustic wind tunnel, and they've been trying to get their money's worth out of it. it's a very clean cockpit. We felt blessed not to have to play games with the controls and switchgear to get them to function. Because the windshield rake is relatively modest, visibility forward is enhanced over that very long hood. Visibility out the rear is also excellent, without much intrusion from the roofline. the cabin is roomy, thanks largely to the efficient shape of the exterior: the chassis is pushed out to the wheels, and the wheelbase is long, leaving 106. 6 cubic feet (sae standard) inside. A safety innovation can be found in the trunk. The well in the cargo floor, holding the spare tire, is built at an angle, so if the 300 is crashed into from the rear, the tire will rotate upward allowing the frame structure to deform as designed. driving impressionthe 300c feels as solid as it looks, having inherited significant mechanicals from its parent company, mercedes-benz. From a handling standpoint, the 300 is heavily and positively influenced by a design borrowed from the mercedes e-class: five-link rear suspension mounted to a subframe, and the short-arm/long-arm front suspension, modified for the 300's longer wheelbase, wider track and bigger wheels. the ride in the 300c is very smooth and solid without any weakness that we could find in a half day of hard driving, and we wouldn't change a thing. The 120-inch wheelbase is longer even than that in the chrysler 300s from the 1950s, but the overall length is not. Nor is it longer than the front-wheel-drive 04 chrysler it replaces. Result: great ride, reasonable parking. and the cornering is good enough that higher-performance tires should be made available. The 300c comes with continental all-season tires, p225/60r18, but they squeal early and don't do justice to the chassis. Chrysler engineers have gotten the rack-and-pinion steering right; it's just the right amount of weighty, and provides a secure feeling.
