2003 pontiac vibe review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Slam poetry in motion. introductionwhen pontiac first revealed the vibe, it did it with slam poets describing the vehicle's appeal. So this five-door hatchback has a roomy interior, a creative cargo-carrying system and even a standard 110-watt electrical outlet so occupants can plug in a laptop computer or video game unit. However, for the japanese market, toyota simply sells right-hand-drive versions of the pontiac-styled vibe as the toyota voltz. See separate review of the toyota matrix at nctd. Com.). lineupthree models are available: the base vibe 16,900), the vibe gt 19. 900) and the vibe awd 20,100).  the base vibe is amazingly well equipped with air conditioning, a cd player, a two-prong household-style power outlet (as well as two standard automotive power outlets), the rear cargo track system with adjustable tie-down anchors, a height-adjustable driver's seat and a rear hatch that features a glass window that can be opened without having to open the entire hatch. He succeeded.  note: pontiac is having trouble breaking its habit of surrounding its vehicles with lower-body cladding. But at least the vibe's is relatively plain, and is available in either charcoal or body color (although the body color is a $500 option). We think the charcoal looks best on the all-wheel-drive version, giving it some visual elevation and an off-roady, 4x4 (dare we say outback) look. interiorpontiac vibe provides seating for five, and those seats are elevated for a good view of the road. The person at the wheel can enhance that vantage by taking advantage of the manual height-adjustment controls the driver's seat.  the driver operates in a cockpit style environment, and should appreciate some of the nice touches that went into making that environment a pleasant place for driving or even for working.  for example, the front passenger's seatback folds flat forward, so its back can serve as a table for the driver to rest a laptop computer or video game system plugged into the 110-volt outlet. Making this process easier are release levers on both sides of that passenger seatback, so the driver can do this operation one-handed; someone standing outside the car on the passenger's side can easily reach in and do the same thing.  the rear seat has a 60/40 split (and room for at least two full-size adults) and either or both seatbacks can be folded down, providing a utah-shaped flat floor all the way from the rear hatch to the right half of the dashboard. The vibe can carry more than 57 cubic feet of cargo, which can be secured by using various tie-downs, including those that lock into position in a clever pair of tracks in the rear cargo floor. Those tracks also are built into the rear seatbacks, so they extend the full length of the rear cargo floor. Making the task of manipulating the manual gearbox easier is the way the shifter is mounted in an extension of the dashboard instead of in a center console. Even though the engine produces slightly less horsepower (because of changes in exhaust routing around the awd's independent rear suspension setup), the gearbox responded nicely when we needed it to kick down in passing situations or for pulling onto freeways. (the awd with the automatic gets a smaller fuel tank, poorer fuel economy, and isn't as quick as the five-speed two-wheel drive.)  the vibe's engine was a little noisy under acceleration, but the drivetrain quieted nicely at cruising speeds. With a solid chassis, engineers are able to do a good job at sound insulation and ride control. We spent a full day in the vibe and were always comfortable.  enhancing the experience are easy to reach and use controls, with the audio system controls at the top of the center stack and with three big dials to control the heat-a/c-ventilation system.  the all-wheel-drive system uses lightweight, aluminum components and has a viscous coupling. It usually sends its torque to the front wheels, but can split it 50/50 front/rear when it detects wheel slippage. Pontiac says the vibe gt will rocket from a standing stop to 60 mph in less than 8. 5 seconds (compared to around 9 or 10 seconds for the base car and 11. 5 for the vibe awd).  the vibe gt's engine also displaces 1. 8 liters, but has been massaged by yamaha, which shortened the stroke but bored out its cylinders and increased the compression ratio to 11. 5:1 (compared to 10. 0:1 for the version in the vibe and vibe awd). The vibe gt engine needs 92-octane fuel, but the payback is 180 horsepower at 7600 rpm. (ford's much-heralded svt focus has only 170 horsepower.)  coupled to the gt's engine is a six-speed manu. 2005 pontiac vibe review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Style and practicality. introductionthe pontiac vibe is popular for its practicality, sporty styling and zippy performance. A new front fascia greatly improves the appearance of the 2005 models. The seating setup is flexible, allowing the driver to flip down the passenger seat when hauling items up to eight-feet long. That seat can be used as a desk for a laptop computer, which can be plugged into the 115-volt electrical outlet.  vibe is best represented in the standard model. It's also inexpensive. A vibe loaded with optional safety features, premium sound systems and cargo compartment accessories retails for about $20,000. And it can get there: all-wheel drive is available for dependable all-weather capability.  the vibe gt is designed to deliver more excitement, but its high-performance engine seems too peaky for this application and adds considerably to the cost. Vibe comes in wild colors, and accessories are available to enhance its look.  new safety features are options for 2005 models, including stabilitrak electronic stability control, side curtain airbags, seat-mounted side-impact airbags, a tire pressure monitor, onstar, and programmable automatic door locks. The front-passenger airbag has been upgraded on all models. 2005 models get new cloth fabrics as standard equipment. The vibe comes standard with wind-up windows, manual door locks, and 16-inch steel wheels, but it is otherwise reasonably well equipped with air conditioning; power mirrors; a cd player; two automotive-style 12-volt outlets; plus a two-prong, household-style 115-volt power outlet.  anti-lock brakes 525) and stabilitrak 495) are optional. Also optional: side-impact and curtain airbags 745) and onstar 695). The awd model comes standard with an automatic transmission and anti-lock brakes.  the vibe gt comes with a 180-horsepower engine and six-speed manual transmission. No automatic is available. Stabilitrak 495) electronic stability control is also optional. A power package 850) adds cruise control, power windows with driver's express-down, and power door locks with remote keyless entry to all models. The optional moon & tunes package 840) adds a power glass moonroof and 200-watt audio system with seven speakers and integrated subwoofer. An in-dash six-cd changer is also available as a stand-alone option 325) or as part of a dvd-based navigation system 1,650). Xm satellite radio 325) and onstar 695) telematics are optional. Optional 16-inch 440) and 17-inch 825) aluminum wheels are available.  to give all that show some go there is a dealer-installed supercharger for the base model that will deliver 7. 5 psi of boost for a 35-percent increase in horsepower and torque. The supercharger can be installed on either manual or automatic vibes, and shares the vibe's 3 year/36,000 mile warranty. walkaroundthe smooth new grille and front fascia give the 2005 pontiac vibe a more contemporary look and hint at the styling direction pontiac is taking with an upcoming sports car, the 2006 solstice.  otherwise, its appearance is unchanged. The vibe was conceived by general motors and is built to toyota assembly standards with toyota components at a joint gm/toyota assembly plant. Toyota sells its own version of the car, called the matrix, with different styling cues. Traditional pontiac styling cues distinguish the vibe. They wanted to make sure it looked like a pontiac. So the front and rear overhangs were kept short. (overhang is the part of the car that sticks out past the bumper.) short overhangs means the wheels are pushed out to the corners of the car. In addition to improving handling, this design helps uphold that traditional pontiac 'wide track' stance. More slope was put into to the rear section of the roof. In profile, the vibe hints at a fastback shape. The encapsulated c-pillars almost look like inverted hockey sticks.  pontiac hasn't quite broken its habit of surrounding its vehicles with lower-body cladding. But at least the vibe's bottom fringe is relatively simple, and is available in either low-key charcoal or even less conspicuous body color 325). The seats are elevated for a good view of the road and the driver gets a manual seat-height adjustment. The driver operates in a cockpit-style environment. Secondary controls are easy to reach and use. Audio controls are located at the top of the center stack. Three big dials are used to control the heating/air-conditioning system. We found the handbrake lever awkward, though.  nice touches went into making the vibe a pleasant place for driving or even for working: the front passenger's seatback folds flat, so its back can serve as a table for a laptop computer or even a video game system plugged into the 115-volt outlet. It's a convenient setup with release levers on both sides of the passenger seatback, so it can be folded with one hand either from the driver's seat or from outside the car.  the rear seat has room for at least two full-size adults. The rear seatbacks are split 60/40 for versatility. With both rear seatbacks and the front passenger seat folded down, vibe provides a perfectly flat cargo area shaped like utah and almost as large: 8 feet from the rear hatch to the right half of the dashboard. With all seats folded, the vibe can carry 54 cubic feet of cargo, which can be secured by using the numerous tie-downs, including those that lock into position in a clever pair of tracks in the rear cargo floor. Those tracks are also built into the rear seatbacks, so when the seats are folded down they extend the full length of the rear cargo floor. The hard finish used in the cargo area makes for easy cleanup, great for dealing with muddy equipment or wet dogs. However, this same hard finish means cargo that isn't secured tends to slide around. An optional seatback pack 80) attaches to the back of the front seat and includes a first-aid kit.  there's also plenty of places to tuck stuff away. Vibe provides nearly a dozen interior storage containers, nine of which keep contents out of view. There's even a compartment behind the base of the back seat, where an umbrella or fishing rods can be kept in a covered pocket. However, it isn't cheap 1,650).  onstar works like a navigation system but there's nothing to program. We found the vibe's engine.

2006 pontiac solstice review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new two-seat roadster is fun to drive. introductionpontiac faithful have been getting short shrift in recent years. The general motors division assigned the task of building and selling excitement hasn't been doing well in either regard. The firebird is history. An australian import wears the emperor's clothes but hasn't earned the crown. It's a great-looking, two-door, two-seater, drop-top sports car for less than 20 big ones. Okay, that's the base price, and there will be few if any base models at a dealer anytime soon, but even adding all the available options boosts the price only to about $25,000.  initially, the solstice sticks to the basics of a two-seat roadster. There's no electronic stability program, antilock brakes cost extra, and occupant safety features are the bare minimum.  but for many drivers, basic delivers. We found the solstice fun, easy to drive, and a hands-down head-turner. And it's built right here in the u. A. lineupinitially, just one model is available. The urethane-clad steering wheel has a tilt adjustment. The six-speaker stereo receives am and fm and plays a single cd. The shift knob wears leather, but seats and door panels are covered in cloth. Next up is a power package for windows, door locks and outside mirrors that also has a keyless remote fob and body-color paint for the mirrors 625). Last, in the form of groupings, is the premium package, which covers the steering wheel, seats and door panels in one of two shades of leather 590); this package, however, is conditioned on also buying the convenience package.  options include air conditioning 960); a string of stereo upgrades adding, first, an mp3 capability 195), then an mp3 capability plus six-disc, in-dash cd changer 495), then a seven-speaker-with-subwoofer monsoon system 395) that's not available with the base stereo, and finally an xm satellite radio system with a three-month trial subscription 325), which requires the monsoon system; polished aluminum 18-inch wheels 495); chrome 18-inch wheels 695); limited-slip rear differential 195); floor mats 60); and a smoker package with lighter and ash tray 40). Onstar is slated to make the option list before the close of 2005, a five-speed automatic transmission in the spring of 2006.  dual-stage front airbags are standard. There's not a straight line, a flat surface or a right angle on the body of this car. Indeed, the only body part formed by the traditional method of stamping a piece of sheet metal is the small panel behind the front wheel well. All the rest come via a process called hydroforming, which uses extremely high water pressure to press sheet metal into a mold. Slow and low-volume, yes, and labor-intensive, but the best way pontiac's engineers found to translate the idealized, flowing lines of the original concept car to reality. Hydroforming generally results in stiffer chassis, which is a key element for sharp handling and a smooth ride.  an iconic, two-piece grille and an emblem are the sole clues on the front end that this car is a pontiac. The bumperless, severely rounded fascia hints of early bmw coupes and convertibles. Headlights and, when ordered, fog lamps are recessed into the fenders' upper and lower outboard curves, respectively. The hood rises gradually between primly proud headlights to the cowl, where it runs into a parking strip for the windshield wipers at the base of the windshield.  the forward portion of the side silhouette is strikingly similar to that of the very first corvette, with the front overhang tautly draped over a wheel well positioned at the extreme end of the car. The stubby rear quarters resemble the current lotus elise sans spoiler, with the profile drawn sharply up from the rear wheel well and over the trailing edge of the clamshell trunk to aero-like fairings behind the high-back seats. The body filling the space between the wheel wells easily could have been sliced out of that same corvette and sectioned to tuck into the solstice's relatively short wheelbase.  stylistically, the convertible top is a coup. Yes, the solstice looks best with the top down, but even with it up, the side aspect shows a decent aero look. And this is with a storage system that tucks the top away under a clamshell-like, rear-hinged trunk lid covering the entire back part of the car. The trick is a couple of mini-ferrari dino-like sail panels bookending the vertical rear window. These do add complexity, however, and an extra step or two in opening the trunk while the top is up and in raising and lowering the top. Click the remote, and three latches pop loose, one in the center for the trunk lid, the other two outboard beneath the two wings. Fold the wings up, then open the trunk; to close, reverse the process, always remembering to latch both wings. The entire process takes less than a minute.  the rear view looks like it was sketched by somebody with an understanding of and affinity for fluid motion. Taillights sit atop the fenders, directly above pods housing the combination back-up lights and reflectors. A single, chromed exhaust tip exits through a half-round opening molded into the right end of the black mesh diffuser that runs across the bottom of the rear fascia.  the solstice may not break new ground as a design, but is instead a sweet blending of elements of sports cars that have gone before. The result is an eye-pleasing, delightfully proportioned, almost sensuous package. interiorconsidering that it incorporates components from cadillac, chevrolet, opel, and fiat, the cabin of the solstice looks and feels more integrated, more of a whole than expected. Quality of fit and finish on the test car was on a par with the competition, save for an uneven cover on the passenger airbag and one fixture central to a functioning convertible. Ergonomics, too, earn mostly good scores.  an eyebrow-like hood rises from the dash near the driver's door to loop over the instrument cluster and drop down the right-hand side of the center stack, offering the passenger a hail mary hand-grip before wrapping around the shift boot. A pair of large, round dials report engine and road speed, with a smaller dial resting in the saddle between those two doing the same for fuel level. Too bad all three circles make goo-goo eyes at the unlined top rather than gaze meaningfully into the eyes of the driver. Three well-proportioned climate control knobs fill the space in the center stack between the vents and the stereo panel, the last a jarring rectangle unlike every other shape in the solstice's interior. We would have placed the solo power point on the other side of the binnacle, near the passenger, though, to keep the radar detector cord out of the way of the climate control knobs and stereo.  door latch handles are comfortably located high up and forward on the doors. The power mirror control, too, is convenient, at the top of the inside door pull just below the door handle, where an index finger can easily manipulate it. The hand brake is on the passenger side of the drive tunnel, opposite of where it should be, however. The power window buttons would be easier to use if they were farther forward in the armrests. And the knob for adjusting the seatback angle is difficult to reach with the doors closed.  seats fit us well, although the bottom cushions came up a bit short on thigh support. And a seat height adjustment would ease the strain on the hamstrings over long drives. Space-wise, the solstice compares well with the miata, with an inch more head room, identical hip room and barely half an inch less leg room.  elevated seats would improve outward visibility all the way around, too, although the high beltline arguably adds a degree of safety in side impacts. On the subject of occupant safety, the solstice provides what's mandatory and nothing more. Thus, while every 2006 mazda miata mx-5 has frontal airbags, seat-mounted side airbags and passenger-seat child safety seat anchors, the solstice comes only with frontal airbags.  storage consists of a decent-size glove box, plus a couple of nets sewn.
