2008 scion tc review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Restyling freshens fun-to-drive coupe. introductionthe scion tc has been subtly restyled inside and out for 2008. Apple ipod connectivity comes standard along with a pioneer subwoofer. And navigation is now available.  the scion tc is an affordably priced but thoroughly practical and well-equipped sport coupe. It benefits from toyota's attention to quality, durability and reliability. The body panels fit tight and straight, and quality construction is evident. Interior materials are first-rate, and show attention to detail. The bucket seats are comfortable and there's enough room to suit tall drivers. It is quiet, smooth, and plenty powerful. Its steering, ride quality and handling are commendable. A full array of airbags is available to enhance safety.  the scion nameplate may represent toyota's next-generation future, but in some ways the 2008 scion tc brings a welcome blast from the past, when sport coupes were often regarded as a kind of blank canvas for personal expression. This price buys a surprising amount of standard equipment, including air conditioning; reclining front sport bucket seats with cloth upholstery and position memory; height and tilt adjustments for driver's seat; power locks and mirrors with integrated turn signals; a tilt wheel with audio controls; 160-watt pioneer am/fm/cd/mp3 stereo with subwoofer and ipod connectivity; a huge, power-retracting glass sunroof; a two-tiered console; reclining rear seats; keyless entry; engine immobilizer; cargo cover, and a dozen other comfort and convenience goodies. It all rolls on p215/45zr bridgestone potenzas on 17-inch alloy wheels.  the lower-priced spec package is also available with manual 15,300) or automatic 16,100). The idea here is to provide a stripped-down model for tuners and customizers, so they don't pay for fancy parts that they are just going to take off and replace anyway. Spec package models come with downgraded upholstery on less-adjustable seats, non-tilting urethane steering wheel without audio controls, and p205/55r16 tires on steel wheels. They also skip the core model's power windows, cruise control, two-tier console, subwoofer, and engine immobilizer. The panoramic glass roof remains but it does not retract. Colors are limited to super white, flint mica, black sand pearl, and classic silver metallic.  safety features for all tc scions include optional side-impact and side-curtain air bags 650) designed to provide torso and head protection. (head injuries are the leading cause of death in side impacts.) a knee airbag is standard, along with the mandated dual front airbags. Anti-lock brakes and electronic brake-force distribution are standard also, as is a tire-pressure monitor.  options include a premium pioneer sound system with video capabilities 689); and a navigation system 2,250) with seven-inch touch screen. There are no other factory options, but scion dealers offer more than 40 dealer-installed accessories, ranging from shift knobs and satellite radio (either xm or sirius) to a supercharger kit good for 200 horsepower. Special toyota racing development (trd) items include 18- and 19-inch wheels, a lowering kit, struts and shock absorbers, rear anti-roll bar, a high-performance clutch, a quicker shifter, a stainless steel muffler, and a shift-point indicator light kit. walkaroundthe somewhat bland styling of the 2005-07 scion tc was intentional, offering a blank canvas for hot-rodders and customizers. Frankly, we liked its look of purposeful performance. The 2008 scion tc certainly looks more sophisticated, but whether it looks better is a matter of taste.  most changed is the front end, where the headlight housings now contain three sharply defined separate lenses for high beams, projector-type low beams, and amber turn signals, all arranged in a subtle diagonal. The top and bottom grille textures no longer match, with a fussy diagonal-oval mesh up top that fades to solid at the sides; and horizontal slats down below. As before, a thin, led center stop light appears gray until it lights up; and the bottom edge of the bumper sports a prominent horizontal pout.  otherwise the outside isn't much changed, and that's a good thing. Even the standard six-double-spoke alloy wheels are carried over from last year.  the doors are quite long for such a small car, and the door handles are of the reach-around-and-pull variety that we like. The long rear side window suggests a two-door sedan more than a hatchback coupe, and makes the design flow from front to rear gracefully. It filters 97 percent of uv rays and 100 percent of infrared to avoid sunburned occupants. All of the body panels fit tight and straight, and quality flows from every pore. interiorinside the 2008 scion tc are first-rate materials. There aren't a lot of different grains and textures, and the swoopy brushed-metal center stack housing vents, sound system and climate control system are a marvel of modern design. Scion has pumped up the volume a bit for 2008, adding metallic accents that match the center stack to the steering wheel spokes and door-mounted grab handles. The driver's and shotgun seats can be reclined all the way down into what scion calls a sleep position.  the core model's rear seats recline through 10 stops and 45 degrees to convert the interior into a conversation bin. With seats up, there's more than 26 inches of cargo length there; with the second seats dropped, almost 60 inches; and with the front passenger seat folded over, almost 104 inches of cargo length available.  attention to detail is evident in the mechanical seat position memory on the front bucket seats, the 60/40 split folding rear seat, the dead pedal for the driver's left foot, fully closing vents, and a cover for the stereo faceplate.  the three-pod instrument panel is amber-illuminated, deeply tunneled and easy to use, day or night, as are the balance of the instruments and controls. The metal-tone center console features a cast-aluminum temperature control dial flanked by soft-touch electronic buttons and an lcd display showing exterior temperature, seven fan speeds and a clock. Sirius and xm satellite radio are optional.  the head unit allows ipod owners to listen to their tunes through the car speakers and to control song selection and read stored information through the head unit's display. Also standard (on core models) for 2008 is a pioneer six-inch subwoofer with 35-watt maximum power, tuned specifically for the tc. This compact unit is mounted in the under-floor storage area, keeping it out of sight and leaving the cargo floor clear.  the optional premium audio adds the ability to download skins to play on the head unit's organic electroluminescent (oel) faceplate. Pioneer software also allows customers to burn their own images and movies onto a cd and upload them onto the head unit.  the premium audio system comes with rear head unit outputs, allowing the addition of external amps to boost power to additional speakers and subwoofers. Scion claims that none of these modifications will affect the operation of head unit's standard features.  both the standard and premium head units feature scion sound processing (ssp), which allows listeners to choose from three pre-set equalizer settings; automatic sound leveling (asl); and sound retouch technology (srt), which provides clearer cd sound quality. driving impressionthe 2008 scion tc is fun to drive. The engine is quiet, smooth, and plenty powerful in a 2900-pound car; and at full throttle, it sounds potent without being intrusive, because it has a valved muffler that opens up at high rpm and can be worth as much as 5 horsep.

2004 scion xa review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A new name for a new kind of toyota. introductiontoyota admits, somewhat sheepishly, that it's lost touch with the offspring of its faithful. Oh yeah, they also have to live up to toyota's quality, durability and reliability standards.  the scion xa does all that. Solid construction, quiet operation, comfortable accommodations and low maintenance costs are all toyota traditions. Spice and pizzaz haven't been. The scion will test toyota on the latter. lineupscion xa comes in one iteration 12,480). There is a choice of transmissions: a five-speed manual transmission is standard. Many are appearance oriented and include appliques for b-pillars, the fuel door, instrument panel, door sills and rear bumper; license plate frames; mudguards; tail lamp garnish; rear spoiler; removable roof rack; red, blue or clear covers for the remote keyless entry; and sport pedals in choice of red, blue or silver. Functional accessories include a cargo liner, net and tote; carpeted floor mats; auto-dimming rear view mirror; satellite tuner and auxiliary antenna; subwoofer; security system; wheel locks; and alloy wheels. On the performance list are a cold-air induction system; front strut tower brace; and an assortment of offerings from toyota racing development (18-inch wheels with pirelli p zero tires, lowering springs, strut/shock set; and sport muffler). walkaroundthink toyota matrix, but a bit smaller and with a bit less of a wedge look. A squat and slightly tapering glasshouse sits on mildly rounded doors with a fairly prominent character line running along the lower edge and visually tying together the front and rear wheel wells. The windshield angles down into a more sharply angled hood. Head lamps and tail lamps notched into the leading and trailing edges of the front and rear wheel well surrounds, respectively, mirror each other, making for a stylish set of book ends from the side view. The one-piece lift gate tucks down between the tail lamps, the backlight merging smoothly with the side rear quarter windows.  the scion xa is a subcompact, so the size and arc of the doors aren't remarkable. Tall people will have to duck their heads when climbing in, especially when climbing into the rear seats. The outside door handles, though, are the nice, full-open type, where a hand can completely enclose the pull. The liftgate clears six-footers, but not by much. interiorthe most notable feature inside the scion xa is the placement of the instrument cluster: in a hooded recess centered in the upper portion of the dash. This is supposed to reduce the time and eye adjustment necessary checking the gauges. Over time, drivers will no doubt adjust, but it's awkward at first. The instruments' decor facilitates an easy quick scan, with a large speedometer communicating via black-on-white graphics parked next to a smaller, white-on-black tachometer; the fuel gauge occupies the lower quadrant of the speedometer, the liquid crystal odometer and trip meter sit in the space beneath the tach.  the driving position is comfortable; the seats are competent, although anything more than a long commute might uncover some of the unavoidable consequences of the xa's affordability. Pedals are well positioned, even for spirited driving, with the brake pedal near enough to the accelerator to invite an occasional heel-and-toe downshift. Outward visibility is on a par with other cars in this class, which is to say attentive drivers should rarely find themselves in difficult situations.  for a car as affordable as the xa, the quality of the interior and its assembly is noteworthy. No, it's not luxurious, but neither is it cheap. Broad expanses of plastic have a nice tactile texture. Brushed aluminum-like strips of brightwork accent the dash and door panels. Inside door pulls are shallow, but not troublesome. The solid-colored seat bolsters bracket the subtly patterned insets. Dash-mounted air conditioning vents pivot only vertically instead of rotating 360 degrees as their round, eyeball-like design allows, invites, even.  the stereo is mounted high on the dash, above the air conditioner control panel. Storage space comprises glove box, door map pockets, cup holders, center console and under-floor space in the cargo area.  rear-seat legroom is cramped with anybody taller than six feet in the front.  overall, people space is competitive with the leaders of the class, the ford focus, honda civic and vw golf, varying by no more than an inch or so. This may not seem noteworthy save for the fact the xa is almost 20 inches shorter than the civic and more than 10 inches shorter than the focus or the golf; it is taller, though, by about 4 inches across the line. To the extent, in fact, that anybody considering ordering the trd shock and spring accessory combo (total cost: $518) should drive an xa so equipped and a base xa before deciding.  otherwise, the xa's light weight and taut footprint promise more than the rather anemic engine delivers. Even the class leaders' base engines pump out more power, albeit at a cost in fuel economy. Seekers of spirited motoring should either look elsewhere or plan on spending a lot of time in the lower gears. Still, sufficient sound deadening materials have been sandwiched into the body and assorted braces to spare occupants significant engine whine. And the quality of assembly normally expected from toyota leaves few if any buzzes, squeaks or rattles.  oddly, while the xa and the xb share the same powertrain, the test xa delivered shifts that were more sure and confidence inspiring than the test xb's. Feedback from the clutch and brakes is comparable, though. summarythe buzz about this car has nothing to do with quality of design or assembly, or with its sportiness or lack thereof. 2005 scion tc review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. This little rocket was developed in only 13 months with a single purpose in mind.  the scion tc means to make mincemeat of the honda civic that is so popular with gen y drivers by offering a single, very well equipped model at a nearly unbeatable low price and a menu of options that will allow owners to built cars unique to their tastes.  the engine is quiet, smooth, and plenty powerful. The steering, ride quality and handling are commendable. Braking is powerful, with abs and electronic brake force distribution standard. This car is surprisingly quiet, the interior materials are first-rate, and attention to detail is evident. The bucket seats are comfortable and there's enough room to suit tall drivers. A 160-watt stereo is standard, and a full array of airbags is available.  this is perhaps the best small japanese coupe we have ever driven, at a price that is ridiculously low. lineupthe scion tc hatchback coupe 15,950) comes only one way, with no model name attached. (they apparently couldn't call it xc because volvo already uses xc90 for its sport utility). It comes with all the major comfort and convenience items built in, including air conditioning, power steering, brakes, locks and mirrors, a tilt wheel, a 160-watt pioneer 6-cd changer am/fm setup, sport bucket seats with cloth seating and position memory, two-tiered console, reclining front and rear seats, keyless entry, engine immobilizer, cargo cover, and a dozen other items.  there are only two factory-installed options, the automatic transmission at $845 and the side and roof air bag system for $650. To make the car more palatable to more people, scion has chosen a menu of 40 different freestanding options, more than any other car in its class, ranging from a $4500 supercharger kit good for 200 horsepower to a selection of different chrome and leather shift knobs. Special toyota racing development (trd) high-performance items for the scion tc include 18- and 19-inch wheels, a lowering kit, struts and shock absorbers, rear anti-roll bar, a high-performance clutch, a quick shifter, a stainless steel muffler, and a shift-point indicator light kit. Toyota's high-performance arm is already working on a 300-horsepower package of parts for the lunatic fringe. walkaroundthe look of the scion tc is one of purposeful performance. It's not blatant, and it doesn't come with spoilers, rocker moldings or wings, but all the ingredients are there. The standard panorama glass roof is an unexpected bonus in this price class, fitted without gaskets for a tight, no-creaks fit. It filters 97 percent of uv rays and 100 percent of infrared, to avoid damage to occupants.  the doors are quite long for such a small car, and the door handles of the reach-around-and-pull variety that we like. The long rear side window suggests a two-door sedan more than a hatchback coupe, and makes the design flow from front to rear gracefully. The tc is the first purpose-built scion, the other two having been developed from concept vehicles, and although it is inexpensive, it is anything but cheap. interiorinside the scion tc, there are lots more positive surprises. Materials are first-rate, there aren't a whole lot of different grains and textures, and the swoopy brushed-metal center stack housing vents, sound system and climate control system, is a marvel of modern design. Very comfortable, with enough fore/aft adjustment to suit very tall american drivers regardless of age. The driver's and shotgun seats can be reclined all the way down into what scion calls a 'sleep' position, and the rear seats recline through 10 stops and 45 degrees of recline to convert the interior into a conversation bin. With seats up, there's more than 26 inches of cargo length there; with the second seats dropped, almost 60 inches; and with the front passenger seat folded over, almost 104 inches of cargo length available.  there are lots of convincing little touches indoors, like the mechanical seat position memory on the front bucket seats, the 60/40 split folding rear seat, the very decent amount of storage space with the seats down, the dead pedal for the driver's left foot, fully closing vents, and a cover for the stereo system's faceplate. The three-pod instrument panel is amber-illuminated, deeply tunneled and easy to use, day or night, as are the balance of the instruments and controls. driving impressionthe engine in the scion tc has been around in one form or another as a car and truck powerplant for many years, continuously improved for power, torque, and toyota levels of quietness and reliability. It comes with electronic variable valve timing for good low end torque development, and twin balance shafts for smoothness. Tuned to 160 horsepower and 163 foot-pounds of torque for this application, the engine is quiet, smooth, and plenty powerful in a 2900-pound car, and at full throttle, it sounds powerful without being intrusive, because it has a valved muffler that opens up at high rpm and can be worth as much as 5 horsepower.  the transmission gearing in the automatic that we drove for this test is wholly unsuitable for bigtime acceleration, with an overall ratio of just over 10:1 (the first-gear ratio times the axle ratio), while the manual is almost 50 percent lower, almost 15:1, for maximum acceleration in first gear. However, the automatic does move out smartly, it's obviously much easier to live with in gooey traffic, and will get significantly better highway mileage than the manual, which is saddled with a very low 4. 235 axle ratio. No complaints on the powertrain.  the steering, ride quality and overall handling of the scion tc were commendable, in part due to its 106-inch wheelbase, longest in the class. It steers with a hefty touch, but accurate pointing, and transitions are easy and without drama. That's because the tc has low-cost macpherson strut front suspension coupled with an expensive independent double-wishbone rear suspension not found on many cars in this price class. Bridgestone potenza tires originally developed for the hot-rod lexus is 300 are standard.  braking is accomplished with a combination of ventilated front and sold rear discs, 10. 8 inches front and 10. 6 inches rear, generously sized and quite powerful for a car this light, with both abs and electronic brake force distribution built into the standard price. All it takes is money. There's nothing missing. Bucket Seats✔ AM/FM✔ Climate Control✔ CD Changer✔ Air Conditioning
