2013 mazda mazda3 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Sporty compact sedan and hatch. introductionthe mazda3 is a sporty alternative to the honda civic and toyota corolla. Launched as a 2010 model, the current-generation mazda3 got a refresh for 2012, including mazda's skyactiv technology.  the mazda3 looks smooth, pretty and aerodynamic. The sedan boasts a smooth 0. 27 coefficient of drag, while the five-door gets a 0. 29 cd, slippery for a hatchback. This reduces wind noise and improves fuel economy. Skyactiv is the most fuel-efficient of the lineup, with an epa-estimated 27/39 mpg with the standard 6-speed manual, and an impressive 28/40 mpg city/highway with the optional 6-speed automatic. A 6-speed manual is the only available transmission. It's fun to drive, but fuel economy suffers with a mediocre 18/25 mpg city/highway.  the mazda3 models have nice interiors with terrific seats. Controls are intuitive and easy to reach and use. The center stack is clean, the gauges clear, and digital information accessed by a thumb scroll on the steering wheel. Both come with 60/40 split folding rear seats, and they fold nearly flat, so the cargo space can be expanded enormously. In a pinch, the sedan can carry most of what the hatchback can.  ride quality is firmer on the mazda3 than on most competitors, and could be deemed harsh by someone used to driving a corolla. The suspension on all mazda3 models deliver a feel that's more european than japanese. Harsh patches and rough roads never made the ride uncomfortable, however. Mazda3 is front-wheel drive.  the mazda3 is a great alternative for those who want a compact sedan with sporty driving dynamics. Mazda3 competes directly with honda civic and toyota corolla, chevrolet cruze, hyundai elantra. The hatchback also competes with the ford focus hatch or hyundai elantra gt. It's powered by a 263-hp turbocharged 2. 3-liter inline-4 that's mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, and uses a limited-slip differential. Exterior features include a unique front grille, 18-inch alloy wheels, foglights and a unique rear roof spoiler.  a variety of packages and stand-alone options are available for each trim level.  safety equipment on all 2013 mazda3 models includes dual front airbags, front side airbags, curtain side airbags, active front head restraints, and anti-lock brakes with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution. The front fascia below the bumper looks great, even if the sporty black air intakes are more cosmetic than functional.  front fenders are puffed out forward of the wheels. The sedan's coefficient of drag is 0. 27 cd, with the 5-door hatchback at 0. 29 cd. Those are great numbers for a hatchback that isn't also a fastback (like the audi a7).  rear bumpers on mazda3i models are clean and body-colored. On upper trim levels, 16- and 17-inch alloy wheels are sporty and handsome. Thanks in part to those wheels, it looks like it's moving even when it's standing still. interiorevery control on the mazda3 instrument panel is intuitive and easy to reach and use. The center stack is clean, the gauges are clear, and digital information is accessed by a thumb scroll on the steering wheel. In fact, mazda3 is one of the only cars in its class with standard steering-wheel controls. The digital information is easy to read in the sun, at least in the skyactiv models, with blue meter illumination. Others have gray, and the mazdaspeed3 is red.  we drove a mazda3 with terrific leather seats, and one with cloth seats, same padding and bolstering but firmer, maybe because cloth skin gets stretched more, and leather has inherent cushioning.  the sedan's trunk has 11. 8 cubic feet of space, and the hatchback has 17 cubic feet behind the rear seat. The rear seats are split 60/40, and they fold nearly flat, so the cargo space can be expanded enormously.  the 6-speed automatic transmission can be switched to manual mode and shifted with the gated lever. The shift action is another place where mazda logic rules: the lever goes back to upshift, forward to downshift, as in many race cars, because those directions flow with the g-forces on the body during acceleration and deceleration. It's a feel thing, not a think thing. driving impressionthe 2. 0-liter skyactiv powertrain performs ideally. We tested it hard, and it works. The engine makes 155 horsepower and 148 foot-pounds of torque, enough for plenty of acceleration.

Re-engineered premium car at compact price. introductionthe 2010 mazda 3 is a premium car in a compact package. It gets new styling inside and out, a larger, more powerful engine, new transmissions, and even more luxury and technology amenities than the generous helping it offered before. It hasn't been completely redesigned, however. It keeps the same basic architecture, with some upgrades. Introduced for the 2004 model year, mazda calls the 2010 mazda3 an evolution, not a revolution of the previous model. Built on a volvo platform, the previous mazda3 was a sales and critical success for mazda. With that in mind, mazda hasn't radically changed anything on its sales leader. Instead, the company set out to make incremental improvements.  inside, the mazda3 adds bluetooth cell phone connectivity, a bose centerpoint surround system, and an available multi-information display that adds a second level of information. The interior is first-class interior with lots of other available amenities. Higher line models get a multi-information display below the windshield that houses readouts for the vehicle information center, climate system, radio presets, and even the available navigation system. A unique cluster of buttons on the steering wheel controls these functions. The readouts are easy to see and the steering wheel controls work intuitively. It's a pretty trick setup. The other controls are mounted high on the dash's center stack, and are also easy to see and use.  the mazda3 is practical, with useful small items storage up front, as well as plenty of room for the front passengers. The back seat will fit two adults fairly comfortably, provided the front occupants aren't too tall. In both the sedan and hatchback, the rear seats fold 60/40 to create a mostly flat load floor. The result is a sporty car that feels firm and composed on the road, with moderate lean in turns. The steering is sharp and precise, and the brakes provide a linear pedal feel. The suspension deals well with most bumps, though large ruts can pound through with the available 17-inch wheels.  two engines are offered. Sedans are offered as 2. 0-liter i and 2. 5-liter s models, while hatchbacks are only offered as s models. It is offered only with a manual transmission. The moonroof, 6cd and bose package 1395) includes a 10-speaker, 242-watt bose centerpoint surround sound system. The technology package 1195) comes with a navigation system, a full-color version of the multi-information display, sirius satellite radio with a six-month subscription, keyless access and starting, and a perimeter alarm.  safety features standard on all mazda3 models include dual front airbags, front side airbags, curtain side airbags, active front head restraints, tire-pressure monitor, and anti-lock brakes with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution. The styling was just right. No line seemed out of place. The 2010 model uses the same wheelbase as the previous version but it's three inches longer in overall length. Some of the lines on the 2010 model seem somewhat askew, most notably the front end's goofy smile.  the smile comes from a bold new grille. Whereas the last model had a small, high-set grille with a prominent lower air intake, the new model has only the grille, now much bigger and set lower. The five-point shape seen on other mazdas, including the restyled 2009 mx-5, creates the smiley face shape. Mazda says the new grille serves a purpose, making the mazda3 slip through the air better while also taking in sufficient air to cool the engine. The result is a polarizing look that we fear customers may dislike.  the rest of the car is an evolution of the last model and is quite attractive. The grille is flanked by a pair of angled headlights that wrap around to the sides. They're also adaptive, meaning that they point into turns as the steering wheel is turned. That's a pretty neat safety feature on dark country roads, both for the driver and pedestrians.  the headlights come to a point around the side of the car, where they meet up with prominent front wheel flares that surround 16 or 17-inch wheels. The base car gets steel wheels, but higher line models have attractive alloy wheels. The fender flares direct the eye to a rising beltline that starts at the front of the door, bisects the door handles, and leads all the way to the taillights. This line has a stronger wedge shape on the hatchback. On both body styles, another character line is found just above the rocker panel, and it rises as it moves toward the rear wheel. Like the outgoing model, the hatchback features triangular rear side windows and a rear roof spoiler.  at the rear, the sedan has a rear lip spoiler. The hatchback features a five-pointed rear window that reflects the shape of the grille. That platform worked quite well in the last (pre-2010) car, so mazda stuck with that winning formula but tweaked it to make it lighter and stiffer. This was accomplished by using more high-tensile strength steel and thicker steel in key locations, adding gussets to areas such as the suspension mounting points, and employing a technique called weld-bonding to strengthen areas such as the door apertures. Weld bonding, which combines spot welding with the use of structural adhesive, enhances the unibody's flex resistance. The result is an even better handling car. interiormuch of the mazda 3 appeal is the interior, which is first-class for a vehicle of this size and price. Mazda has completely redesigned the cockpit for 2010, taking an approach based on human-machine interface studies that places controls and readouts in two key zones.  controls most frequently used, including the radio and climate dials and buttons, are.

Skyactiv technology improves fuel economy. introductionthe 2012 mazda 3 takes a leadership role in automotive engineering with what mazda is calling skyactiv technology, 'an engineering philosophy that starts with a blank slate and open mind.'  the big change for 2012 is the introduction of a new 2. 0-liter engine that gets mazda's skyactiv treatment, delivering a terrific 28 miles per gallon in the city, 40 mpg on the highway. In fact, during one good run with that engine, we got 43. 7 mpg. The skyactiv engine runs on regular gasoline.  the 2012 mazda3 lineup features two new skyactiv transmissions to go with the skyactiv engine: a 6-speed automatic and 6-speed manual. That big grin that's been fixed on the face of the mazda3 for the past two years has been wiped off, replaced by a smile that's more reserved.  because the mazda3 was redesigned for 2010, including a lighter stiffer chassis and new interior, there aren't a lot of other changes for 2012.  for 2012, the old 2. 0-liter engine remains in the base model. Not by hard tires, space-saving spares, or aerodynamic hubcaps. And 'their 40' refers to hyundai elantra, ford focus, chevrolet cruze, and honda civic, competitors that also reach 40 mpg, in certain models. It's smoother, prettier and more aerodynamic, as the front fenders are also tweaked, puffed out forward of the wheels. The sedan has a 0. 27 coefficient of drag, and the five-door is 0. 29 cd, strong numbers for a hatchback.  there's one change from the interior of the 2011 mazda3, satin rings around the three climate knobs, for a reason mazda actually tested with human beings. Recognition speed and accuracy, and that means less distraction. Every single control on the mazda3 instrument panel is intuitive and easy to reach and use. The center stack is clean, the gauges clear, and digital information accessed by a thumb scroll on the steering wheel. Mazda3 comes standard with steering-wheel controls.  the mazda3 sedan's trunk has 11. 8 cubic feet of space, and the hatchback has 17 cubic feet behind the rear seat. In a pinch, the sedan can carry most of what the hatchback can.  in a day of hard driving on the angeles crest highway and on some mountain roads in southern california, we couldn't find a flaw in the 2. 0-liter skyactiv powertrain. We tested it hard, and it worked.  the 2012 mazda3's 2. 0-liter skyactiv engine makes 155 horsepower and 148 foot-pounds of torque; good hp, excellent torque increase for the 2012 models. At 70 mph the engine spins at a leisurely 2200 rpm, smooth and silent. With the 6-speed manual, it runs 70 mph at 500 rpm more, still can't really hear it.  government fuel economy estimates for the new 2. 0-liter skyactiv engine were not available when this was written. Mazda officials place it at 28/40 miles per gallon. We got 29. 5 mpg driving it hard over the curvy 4910-foot-high angeles crest highway east of los angeles, and 43. 7 mpg returning to the city mostly on the freeway, running 65-70, accelerating and decelerating with the fast flow of traffic.  the 2012 6-speed automatic will downshift aggressively, and upshift at low rpm; few do that. The skyactiv goal was to make it upshift as fast as a twin-clutch automatic manual, and 15 milliseconds is the result.  the 2012 6-speed manual transmission also went skyactiv. This goal was to make it feel like the miata mx-5 gearbox. Bushings were changed to bearings, shafts re-splined, and oil reservoirs shrunk and moved, all to shorten the throw of the shift lever, from 50mm to 45mm, without making it feel heavier. Shortest throw of any passenger car, claims mazda.  the suspension on all 2012 mazda3 models has been tweaked to deliver a more european feel. We ran a lot of harsh patchy pavement on curvy roads, and it wasn't quite a sport sedan, but the feedback was direct, driven hard with the 6-speed automatic transmission in manual mode. The harsh patches never made the ride uncomfortable.  as for the 2. 5-liter engine, with 167 horsepower and 168 pounds of torque, it gets the job done with room to spare. The best happens when the tachometer swings through the 4500-4800 rpm range and keeps pulling to near redline. It climbs hills confidently and cruises on the highway effortlessly. For 2012, the bose 10-speaker surround sound system has been added as standard equipment.  options include rain-sensing wipers and bi-xenon headlamps, offered in only one other car in the compact segment; also dual zone air conditioning and 8-way power driver's seat, offered only by a few others.  safety equipment on all mazda3 models includes dual front airbags, front side airbags, curtain side airbags, active front head restraints, tire-pressure monitor, and anti-lock brakes with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution. Optional safety equipment, in the technology package, includes a blind spot monitoring system, adaptive headlamps and led taillamps. walkaroundthe 2012 mazda3 has been changed in the nose and a little bit in the rear bumper, and there are great new wheels. Mazda has wiped the smile off the face of the mazda3, or at least subdued it. It's like when meg ryan took the silicone out of her lips, she looked a lot better. If skyactiv were ruthless in its rule, they would be erased so the nose is more aero, but, hey, that's a bit too prius. The sedan's coefficient of drag is now 0. 27 cd, with the 5-door at 0. 29 cd, great numbers for a hatchback that isn't also a fastback (like the audi a7). Thanks in part to those wheels, the cliche that it looks like it's moving when it's standing still is true. interiormazda is the manufacturer we long for, when we complain about user-unfriendliness in the cabins of other cars, not to mention the distraction quotient. There are few changes from the interior of the 2011 mazda3, but the changes for 2012 have a reason.  the mission: eliminate distraction, so that the driver can concentrate on driving. Mazda means it, too many others mouth it without studying it. With mazda being neck-deep in racing, they know how to take up less of the driver's attention with necessary gauges and controls. Few if any other manufacturers act with such careful logic. Not ford, with the new focus and its optional and problematic myfordtouch.
